Jimm,

I'm working on starting a blog up too, though it will probably not be as interesting at least not for a while.

Mine is: http://starnu.blogspot.com

If you want to try and generate some revenue, it will definitely take some time as you'll need to generate a fairly large reader base to make it worth while. I'm using ad sense and I'm also a Fulltilt and Amazon affiliate. Those can be set up from there site. Also, I would suggest you check out feedburner.com which will help you optimize and publicize your blog.

I also think you need to go with a different template, because the white on white is fairly harsh.

My name is LuckyJimm and I am a compulsive gambler. I'm 29 years old.

In 2005 I dropped out of an English literature PhD largely because of my gambling

I spent the next year unemployment and living in isolation with my parents who were fully aware of my poker addiction. Lovingly, despairingly they sent me to therapists, counsellors and psychiatrists.

I always thought LuckyJimm was this crusty septuagenarian Vegas low limits grinder who had survived that town for 5 decades or thereabouts eating for free and generally taking advantage of every giveaway gimmick the hotel-casinos ever thought up.

Now I have no respect for him. This is why they invented the UIGEA.

I have edited out typos now! I am a better re-writer than writer.

Thank you for the constructive advice. All this is new to me. Yes, I will work on both the layout, the content, and finding the right advertising/affiliate deal. I think this blog could be a very positive outlet for my energies. Better than railbirding, anyway.

luckyjimm - let me ask you this, if you are fine with being poor, why not take the plunge and try to write.

Also, why on earth you want a Ph.D if you want to write, just write!

I like the blog, it's sobering but good.

Good point. I had a particular PhD topic which, had I completed it and done it justice, would have made a very publishable modern literary biography/history. It would have been reviewed in the broadsheets; I'd have used it to get reviewing work and future commissions. There would be nothing to stop me completing it outside of university, however, apart from my own self-doubt.

Great start on the blog Jim! Writing is most definitely a more fulfilling career path than boring online poker.

Here's a great idea for you. Since you basically have nothing right now, come up with a book idea that highlights your poker adventures, win or lose. Make sure you play more live than online (better stories and characters). You must move out of your parents house NOW! Live in your car, on a buddy's couch. Sleep on park benches (ala Howard Lederer). Lie, cheat, steal, or shovel sh*t your way to a starting bankroll. The more desperate the better story. Blow some of your winnings on hookers and strippers. Party it up in Vegas, Monte Carlo, Paris, etc.. Update your stories on the blog and make money on the high traffic. Then publish your story as a book. Win or lose you will be at least famous or maybe even make some decent cash.
Good Luck!
