[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] It depends. A very thin, chain-smoking vegan with cholesterol of 120 will never get heart disease or diabetes, which are two of the major killers of americans, particularly obese Americans. The vegan smoker could be expected to live quite a bit longer than the fat ass. But if you're talking about a smoker who's an average American (fat but not obese, eating a crappy american diet full of meat and dairy) versus a nonsmoking obese guy on roughly the same diet, the obese guy probably has a less bad health expectation than the slightly thinner smoker. [/ QUOTE ] Since when is meat/dairy bad for people and being a vegan healthy? You can overeat as a vegan just as much as you can overeat meat. It's the portions that matter... [/ QUOTE ] Vegans aren't going to get much saturated fat in their diet which is a leading cause of heart disease |

the problem is that obesity has a much wider range than smoking - someone can be mildly obese, but it's rare that people smoke ~5 cigarettes a day. [/ QUOTE ] i'm one of those ~5 cigarettes a day people, when i smoke |

daryn -- smoking does increase your risk of getting heart disease, but it's not a very stong effect. For example, Japan has more smokers than the US, but much less heart disease, and this can be explained by their much lower consumption of animal products.
Yobz -- yes, a vegan could still have an unhealthy diet by eating alot of processed foods and added sugars. A vegan who eats nothing but tofu hot dogs and froot loops with soy milk isn't eating well, and certainly could overeat and become fat. But if you're eating a balanced diet with no processed foods and lots of fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and whole grains, then it is actually very difficult to overeat. This is the diet I was picturing the chain-smoking vegan to be on, and it is nearly impossible to eat too much on this sort of diet. The foods are just too filling. |

The psychological bliss accompanying eating a pound of red meat covered in cheese (I assume it's melted cheese) would override any negative health effects it had on your body. Mind over matter and such.

this doesn't address the question perfectly, but smokers who exercise live longer than non smokers who don't.
and for the dude who said that being fit and smoking are mutually exclusive, i know a number of people who are in amazing shape and smoke. |
