Tristania was founded in 1996 in Stavanger, Norway. Amongst the founding members was Morten Veland, who composed most of the songs and lyrics and performed guitar and vocals. The framework of their music borrowed heavily from Norwegian black metal, with aggressive drumming and guitar riffs combined with atmospheric keyboards. However, their music was complemented by the use of female vocals, violin, and choral arrangements. These classical influences, inspired by the experimental works of the British death/doom bands, were some of the defining features of gothic metal.

After the release of their second album, the genre classic Beyond the Veil, in 1999, Morten left the band under unpleasant terms, and formed Sirenia. With this group he has continued to compose music similar to that of his work in Tristania, although the use of orchestral parts has led Sirenia further towards symphonic metal than what was ever done in Tristania.
