Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
[ QUOTE ]
daryn, "what's so unreasonable about wanting to pay for what i get? oh wow the cab didn't explode. wow, i got to my destination in one piece! we didn't even kill any pedestrians! kudos to you oh taxi driver! let me rain tips upon you." WTF? I mean, do you tip at restaurants when you get the food you ordered served to you in a reasonable manner in a reasonable amount of time? Do you tip a poker dealer when dealt hands exactly as they are expected to? If you tip waitresses and poker dealers, it makes no sense to me why you would feel differently about cab drivers. [/ QUOTE ] yes i tip waitresses, i tip poker dealers, i tip cab drivers. yes i think it's stupid. |

Also, I completely agree with El Diabolo in this respect: the one group of service people I'm always sure to tip are hotel maids. They do a [censored] job for [censored] money, work extremely hard and are very poorly rewarded. A fiver ($10) under the pillow makes a real difference to their income here in the UK. [/ QUOTE ] I haven't even thought of tipping a hotel maid before. How do you do it? |

Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
also you know why the cabbies don't prefer a flat rate? because they are prob. making way more money this way. they like to complain when they get undertipped because the IRS taxes 20 whatever %.. but what happens when people tip too much? do they report the extra to the IRS? i have a hunch the answer is no.

Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
Didnt see this mentioned, but you can almost always get
a free ride to a strip club...Just tell the cabbie, "Can you give me a free ride to XXXXX ?" If they say no, which they might, just ask the next cabbie in line (Has never happened to me). They usually respond by something like, "Oh, so you know about free cab rides." And dont even bother tipping when you get there. |

[/ QUOTE ] uhh, ldo the thing is, you're also ostensibly getting better service by tipping also - i don't see how people fail to understand that this is win-win for both sides (mostly). the downfalls are in the OP. |

I haven't even thought of tipping a hotel maid before. How do you do it? [/ QUOTE ] Some people tip daily, I tip on leaving. Put it in an envelope and leave it on the bedside table, or just leave it under your pillow for them to find as they make the bed. |

[ QUOTE ]
He then fumbles through his wad of cash and finds 1 more 1-dollar bill and says "this is all i have for change". [/ QUOTE ] I noticed on one of the cabs in vegas a sign saying that the cabbie only carries $5 in change and rest goes in lockbox. I assume it is lip-service for theft deterrence, but if that was actually the case, WTF? You can't carry $15 in change? And I forgot to tip maids this trip! I'm usually pretty good about that. Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
[ QUOTE ]
I took a taxi from MGM to Paris and the driver took some back street and we got there super quick and the fare was like 7$, so I was preparded to give him a nice tip. I then hand him a $20 and he fumbles through his money and hands me what appears to be 3 or 4 1-dollar bills and says "Is that good enough?" ... He then fumbles through his wad of cash and finds 1 more 1-dollar bill and says "this is all i have for change". [/ QUOTE ] See, now this is completely unacceptable and the mark of a real d-bag cabbie. |
