Re: OT: Official POG Baseball Postseason thread
Durron, nothing you said above makes any sense at all.
http://www.tangotiger.net/UZR0003.html http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstat...irstName=Derek Basically, Derek Jeter is the worst fielding SS in the majors over the past 8 years. Derek Jeter is bad at fielding (for a Major League shortstop). Derek Jeter has never been good at fielding. The people who give out gold gloves are idiots. |

http://www.tangotiger.net/UZR0003.html [/ QUOTE ] the whole article is full of stuff like this: [ QUOTE ] This entire table looks suspect. On a per play basis, the average 2B and 1B are even. The whole thing just looks wrong. [/ QUOTE ] |

4. Giambi vs. Mientkiwicz (or however you spell it) - Minky is an awful offensive 1st baseman and Giambi is an aging bloated freak. Money can fix this problem, but I can't imagine either of those options is very palatable for next year. [/ QUOTE ] Although correct... DON'T be dissin my boy Doug!!1 I'll come and hunt you down..LOL |

Re: OT: Official POG Baseball Postseason thread
The guy's talking about when you adjust for position (which apparently, is hard to do).
I linked to the raw UZR numbers. Fielding stats are pretty rough, but Derek Jeter grades out horribly year after year. It's not a fluke. Jeter is teh suck at fielding SS. |

Re: OT: Official POG Baseball Postseason thread
The Range Statistic has pretty much proven Derek Jeter is a poor shortstop. He puts a lot of 'mustard' on the plays he makes. All of the 360's and jumping in the air when he doesn't have to fools a typical Yankee fan. Sometimes even the official scorer. That play in the 1st inning of game 3 being scored a hit was one of the worst scoring descisions I have ever seen.
Still, Derek Jeter is a force offensively, but his defense is incredibly over-rated. |

Re: OT: Official POG Baseball Postseason thread
Fielding metrics are by far the least scientific of all the newfangled baseball sabermetric stats. And it will be so until balls in play and infielder's positions are GPS tracked by computer for every play in baseball. There are no fielding statistics that I can think of that aren't flawed in some huge way. Honestly, having a metric for fielding is like having a metric for offensive line blocking in football--just doesn't work with the information we get on a consistent, objective and accurate basis from the games today.
Also, if the stats/articles say that Jeter is the worst fielding SS in the majors over the last 8 years (your words, not mine, plus I'm too lazy to read the articles)... then they're full of [censored]. Because there's no way the absolute worst SS in baseball has made some of the plays that Jeter has. It simply doesn't pass the smell test. On a related note, this is probably one of the first seasons in a while that I've actually felt like the Yankees will improve over the past one. Players with a signficant positive change in expected production for the Yankees: Cabrera, Cano, Wang, Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy Players with a significant negative delta of expected production for the Yankees: Mussina, Damon, Giambi Likely minor declines for: Rivera, Vizcaino, Jeter, Posada, Abreu, Matsui Players who will probably not be on the 08 Yankees: Clemens Yankees will probably add a right handed bat to the lineup. Edit: and an overpriced reliever, as always. Said overpriced reliever will have a semi-effective year but burn out after being rode to the ground by Torre. Also yeah, I think Torre will stay. I don't see much of a decline in one of the best offenses of 2007. I'll allow for a small regression because of the high average age. This does take a huge hit if A-Rod doesn't come back, but I highly doubt he won't. Replacing Igawa/Clemens and the "Chase Clippard" spot (where we had untested AAA guys pitching for over half the season) with Kennedy, Hughes and Chamberlain is a huge upgrade--easily 8-10 wins in a season, even after accounting for Mussina's decline. Wang having another year under his belt and Pettite turning one year older are a wash IMO. |

Re: OT: Official POG Baseball Postseason thread
Jeter doesn't range to his left.
And yes, in all likelihood, Yanks will be fine and make the crapshoot that is the MLB playoffs again, where they will have a 12.5% chance to win the WS. |
