Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
[ QUOTE ]
Barbarian Invasions The plot revolves around the character Rémy's battle with terminal cancer, and his estranged son's efforts, after reluctantly returning from London at the request of Remy's ex-wife Louise, to make his dying father more comfortable in his last days. [/ QUOTE ] i just saw this movie on IFC and i agree that it is an excellent film. to me it represented an almost ideal life that a person can hope to have, if we try our best, and have a little luck. |

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner)
Filmed in the Canadian Arctic, it is an amazing film that works both as a work of fiction and a documentary. The story has everything- romance, murder, suspense, legend, sex, and one of the best chase scenes ever (without explosions or overwhelming music, just a man running barefoot across the ice.) But the most affecting part of the film is how it shows the life of the Inuit tribe and how incredibly different their culture is from anything we know. It is like visiting another planet. |

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
My America...Or Honk If You Love Buddha. The best documentary I have ever seen. I've only seen it once on TV and it's only available on VHS and I've never seen it referenced anywhere else.
Also this thread is probably more enjoyable as a discussion of obscure movies you've seen than a recommendation thread for obscure movies. |

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
It appears no Tarkovsky movies have been listed, so I would have to nominate Stalker, from 1979 which is amazing. Solaris (the original) is also a fantastic film.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
Cool thread I'll definitely check out some of these movies.
I don't know if I'd call it a must see, but The Conversation is a nice little movie starring Gene Hackman and written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It really left me uneasy after seeing it and I couldn't really pinpoint why. |

It was nominated for Best Picture the same year as Godfather II, giving Coppola two of the five nominees. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] A Boy and His Dog - Awesome movie with a really young Don Johnson and a dog that talks to him in his head and can sniff out women in a post-apocalyptic world. [/ QUOTE ] Easily a top ten SciFi movie. [/ QUOTE ] Except absolutely not and terribly hacky. [/ QUOTE ] But the best ending ever - -------------------- [/ QUOTE ] thanks for telling the end to a movie in a tip thread, jackass. |
