Replace him on the roster. Like if they were only carrying Varitek and Mirabelli and one of them pulled a hammy or groin, Mirabelli's two recent injuries and then they had to replace Mirabelli on the roster with Cash, mirabelli would be ineligible for the duration.

[/ QUOTE ] given that Wakefield isn't on the roster, and there is only 1 back-back game in the series (night game following day game) why is Mirabelli on the roster at all? Couldn't they have done Varitek-Cash, and assumed Varitek would catch the whole time? I guess there is a possibility of a 15 inning game or a Varitek injury, but those are edge cases, right?

[/ QUOTE ] They're edge cases, but almost every reason to go 25 deep in a 5 game series (over 8 days) is going to be an edge case. The Sox aren't exactly loaded with depth. Christ, Royce Clayton is on the roster (probably solely for a bunt situation). I could see pinch-running for 'Tek late in a game, having Belli or Cash come in behind the plate, then being able to pinch-hit for their spot if it comes up again.

[/ QUOTE ] If I recall correctly, the old rule was that you could not replace a player in the middle of series for any reason (injured or otherwise). The new rule is that you can replace an injured player in the middle of a series but the injured player becomes ineligible for the subsequent post-season series.
