Where the day takes you.
Cast: Will Smith, alyssa milano, dermot mulroney, sean astin, lara flynn boyle. Havent seen it in a long time, but I'm pretty sure I got the cast right. (lots of cameos) About runaways living out on the streets. |

Very Bad Things Vegas, murder, hookers and blow, comedy. -DeathDonkey [/ QUOTE ] If this counts ( it was on comedy central like 6 times a week for a few months a ways back) then yes, this was a very good movie. Ken |

The Best Years of our Lives, as someone mentioned, is also wonderful. So is Barry Lyndon. (Those two aren't exactly obscure though) Whoever said "Persona" is a weirdo. Ryan [/ QUOTE ] Why, exactly? Persona is both more of a must see and an obscure movie than Barry Lyndon is. |

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
Obscure to most, familiar to some, I have to put this on here b/c I doubt a lot of people here have seen any Iranian films and this is definitely a must see. An absolutely beautiful story: Rang-e khoda (Color of Paradise)
Another obscure to most, familiar to some, I reccommend this film to a lot of people even though I always get mixed reactions: Morvern Callar This film launched Wim Wenders' career and was nominated for numerous awards, so I wouldn't call it obscure, but it is a must see: Paris, Texas This enojyed moderate success on the indie scene when it came out (nomonated for an ISA), and I would call it a must see if you like very small independent films: Virgin Don't know how many of you saw this doc about New York cinephiles, must see in my book: Cinemania |

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
This thread is murdering the definition of obscure.
Primer and Oldboy have already been mentioned, both superb, though Oldboy is a stretch to be obscure. The director of Oldboy's take on Rashomon is Joint Security Area, which IMO is better than Oldboy(if not half as stylish). Also from Korea, I dug A Bittersweet Life. Dead Man's Shoes is a pretty decent English revenge movie. I cannot recommend Stander enough. An incredibly tight little movie about the true story of a South African police officer-turned-bank robber. Marketable star, fun story, relatively accurate retelling... And Disturbia has, what, a 3 week run at #1 in box office? In a similar vein, Thick as Thieves inexplicably went straight to video instead of turning Micheal Jai White into a star. Really fantastic script, one of the better Taratino knockoffs. "I got an addiction to money I just can't shake" Val Kilmer's late career renaissance has been completely ignored, but each of The Salton Sea, Wonderland, and Spartan are easily worth a Netflixing. |

This thread is murdering the definition of obscure. [/ QUOTE ] Funny, though perhaps I'm among the most guilty. [ QUOTE ] Val Kilmer's late career renaissance has been completely ignored, but each of The Salton Sea, Wonderland, and Spartan are easily worth a Netflixing. [/ QUOTE ] The Salton Sea is terrific. Besides Kilmer most of you would enjoy Vincent D'Onofrio playing a deranged dope dealer in perhaps his best performance playing someone deranged since his role as Gomer Pyle in "Full Metal Jacket". Spartan got decent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes but Wonderland for the most part got trashed. But the way it was trashed makes me really want to see it. Some examples: "More than a film flirting with unwatchable, the music video sexiness of Wonderland is dangerous." "...real bottom of the barrel stuff, a scummy story about scummy people" "Along with their tickets to Wonderland moviegoers should also be given a moist towelette. That way after the film they won't have to stand in line at the restroom to wash off the slime." Netflix was made for movies like this. ~ Rick |
