Re: Veganmav eats his food out of the trash: discuss

[ QUOTE ] Even when we go dumpster diving, almost every single time we go we leave more than twice as much perfectly good food as we take. There just isn't enough room in the car/refrigerator/house. (and so we leave it for other dumpster divers who frequent the same dumpster, or we will call our dumpster diving frienids and tell them to go get it) [/ QUOTE ] i was with you until this point. so when you go dumpster diving you*usually* bring with you stuff that you would have normally eaten but instead decide to put in a dumpster for other dumpster divers some of whom are your friends? why not simply eat your food and let your friends dive? or dive and give your friends your food directly? why bring food to a dumpster w/o the intent of actually throwing it away? maybe im just missing something? Barron [/ QUOTE ] We don't take food with us. I mean, there is so much food already in the dumspter, that we can't take it all out, so we leave more than we take. Is this clearer? |

[ QUOTE ]
I guess my main point is, if you're goal is to be a philantrhopist, the best method IMO is to take the warren buffett approach. He lives relatively frugally and spent his life doing what he does best: earning money. If you have potential to earn LOTS of money, giving away money too early is a big mistake IMO. You seem to already grasp this concept to a degree (with regards to only giving away 10k of your 100kish bankroll) so you can still play the higher limits and earn more money. Now imagine that 10k that you gave away was invested with something like a 3% annual return after taxes/inflation. After 50 years, it'd be worth about 44k now. Now you can help 4.5 times as many people assuming the money you spend is proportional to the people you help. Does this make sense? Imagine if Warren Buffett decided to donate almost all his money at the age of 40 instead of age 75. His benefit to the world would be completely dwarfed. I just feel like you have to do what you do best. Your biggest asset to society will not be slowly eliminating waste consumption by dumpster diving. A much more effective way to help society in your situation is to play as much poker as humanly possible, learn about investing, and when you're old to donate it all after you've had a chance to let the money grow. Imagine this scenario, Warren Buffett is a freegan, he spends 1 hour a day eliminating societys waste by dumpster diving etc. Now his hourly rate is really really high, so all that time spent dumpster diving really took away a ton of earning potential which in turn, harmed many many more people that it helped. Most of life can be measured in EV, even if it's just charitable work, make sure you make the best decisions possible. [/ QUOTE ] i do measure many life things in EV. I often do not go dumpster diving because there are good games. I generally only go dumpster diving if there aren't good games, or I am on tilt/not playing well or whatev. Cus it is obv -EV to go dumpster diving when there are good games that I could be playing in. About farming, I hope to farm once the poker games aren't very profitable any more |

[ QUOTE ] Just to let you know, for every meal you eat out of a trashcan to prove a point, I throw out three meals to show that I can. [/ QUOTE ] "Every day, more than 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes--one child every five seconds. 3 " You are very cool dude. citation: 1 Are We On Track To End Hunger? Hunger Report 2004. Bread for the World Institute http://www.bread.org/learn/hunger-re...ck-to-end.html [/ QUOTE ] And by eating other peoples waste, do you know how many of these deaths you prevented? Zero. Absolutely Zero. Hunger isn't fixed by hippies eating garbage, its fixed by modern agriculture and economic prosperity. |
