This really depends on what kind of results you are looking for.

I try to run 3x a week, and then small amounts of free weights with lower weight and more reps. I want to make sure my workout is for slimming and toning my body, not getting big. Tons of guys at my college gym have what I consider to be disproportional upper bodies. It freaks me out.

[/ QUOTE ]

Does it turn you on?

Just kidding. I think the guys with giant chests and bird legs are pretty funny too. Especially since that's the type that expects you to be stunned with awe, and it just ain't happenin'.

See, I'm not going to do something I don't enjoy. I don't see why exercise has to be crappy. I'm sure with the use of intelligence I can find an enjoyable and easy way to get in shape without spending money.

Nothing is easier than grease the groove. And it's the best strength protocol there is.

Won't get you big, though.

You can still do pushups, you just have to balance on your knees instead of on your feet.

It won't be as much of a workout as a regular pushup, but you'll feel the burn if you are a beginner at exercising.

Because you were a smoker, I imagine you won't be able to do a ton of aerobic exercise to begin with, but eventually your lungs should be ok and you can do a ton of aerobics.

A push-up on your knees but done with ONE arm is a decent alternative.

Then you're probably not going to get in very good shape. I mean, maybe you'll make some progress, but have you ever heard the saying "Nothing worth doing is easy"? It's true.

Grease the groove is so easy you'll barely notice you're exercising.

I'm 33 and have been a lazy bastard for the last few years. Other than occasional forays into roller hockey I haven't done a thing.

Last week, I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and have never experienced a more enjoyable workout in my life. Where I live, the rates are more than reasonable. The workouts are fun as hell. A day later, my quads felt like they used to after the workouts I did when I had a 1000+ combined powerlift, and my abs felt like I did 200 sit-ups.

I know you're resistant to paying, but find something that intrigues you, and even if it costs you money, you'll more than make it back in health credits.

[/ QUOTE ]

What's a reasonable rate where you live, and a more than reasonable one? I like hearing nice stories. Here in L.A., the prices can be staggering and very often are.

[/ QUOTE ]

Blarg,

Do you know of any good places in LA to go for this? I'm interested in trying it out.

OP,

I quit smoking 3 days ago after 13 years. Good luck to both me and you.

Take it slow buddy. You need to build up lung capacity. If you break yourself in the first session of whatever you do, you won't keep it up.

Little by little. I gave up smoking before Christmas and am getting there.

L.A. is full of places that teach martial arts. Check out the dog brothers web site for a pretty cool example of guys who combine Filipino stickfighting with jiu-jitsu and even have full contact stickfights, some of which they have on video.

I like to walk so that is definitely in.

[/ QUOTE ]

My newest dog has a lot of energy and I had to start walking her. While it's not much, the two miles a day I walk her every day has given me a lot more energy. Give it a whirl.
