Re: PP Account hax0red. Firewall running, etc...

[ QUOTE ] it's still better to use a free program like passwordsafe. That way you never even type in a password for the important sites. All you have to do is type in the password to open up the program, then, when you double click an entry it copies the password for long enough to paste it. Once you minimize, or close, the passwordsafe program, it deletes the pw from your clipboard. Much preferred. Get it. [/ QUOTE ] Just so I understand.... Using this method, the passwordsafe program stores your passwords, across a network, in their database. Then you have to access the website by typing in a login/password combination (which, btw, is exactly the behavior we're trying to avoid) to access your records across a network just to copy/paste a password instead of typing it in? I hope I'm not understanding this service and/or their procedures - because this just sounds ridiculous! [/ QUOTE ] What made you think this is online or over a network? It's neither. It's all on your computer, there is no network access in any way shape or form associated with using this program. |

Re: PP Account hax0red. Firewall running, etc...
This seems to suggest that it's an online application.
This seems to be the desktop application that you're referring to. However, the web page references that "HyperSafe is currently READ ONLY - all additions and updates are done on your account at PasswordSafe.com." Either way - I don't see this as a better solution to the problem of storing and retaining passwords. If it is a desktop application - then everything is still stored on your harddrive. This gives a hacker a one-stop-shop to all your encrypted passwords. IMO, you're just saving time for the hacker by storing all your passwords in the same location. Also, what is stopping a hacker from writing a persistent-running program that grabs information from the clipboard instead of from your keystrokes. |

Take your pick which one you're more afraid of. |

Re: PP Account hax0red. Firewall running, etc...
If we're going to be honest... Then let's cut the hype (and I don't mean you - I'm talking in general). I haven't seen one thread posted here where someone has actually proven that they've been hacked.
Personally - I'm not afraid of either. I'm also not idiotically clicking every hyperlink on the internet or in every junk spammail I get. Protecting yourself from being hacked is not about copying and pasting passwords. It's about not letting them into your computer in the first place. If there was some general hack targeting poker players there would be many more instances being reported. Hacks like this are going to be targeted at specific players. And once that hacker has access to your system - it really isn't going to matter how you have your passwords stored or how you use them. Once they're in - they're in. |

btw, for all of you saying don't be 100% sure that the person with my password hadn't done it, that's stupid. Sometimes you need to trust people. [/ QUOTE ] Well, I mean, you were wrong... |

Wait, wait, wait.... 1st you say: "(I)...am highly computer savvy.". Then you say: "...just because you prefer to write stuff down and I prefer to leave it with someone does not make your method more right.". ...One of these things is not like the other. Bob's method IS better. If you don't understand why - then you ARE NOT "highly computer savvy". Sorry. [/ QUOTE ] I agree his method is better in a controlled environment, however there were external factors that required someone else have my password. This person did not and has not ever used it. I am not wrong. |

[ QUOTE ] external factors [/ QUOTE ] Elaborate??? [/ QUOTE ] I will not elaborate, it has nothing to do with the issue at hand. Suffice it to say I needed to have my funds handled if I were unable to do so. This is not a foreign concept. Furthermore I have no problem wagering whatever I would keep in Party on the belief that this person would never improperly access my account, so it is +EV for me. |
