Depos are done completely out of the eyes of the court - the attorneys run the show. That's why they can get away with stuff like this. This is definitely not typical - in California anyways, from what I have seen in my limited experience. Usually they are fairly boring and the most excitement comes when someone argues about an objection, or maybe if you have a witness with some juicy details who gets really excited.

He is the guy who is conducting the depo and asking the questions in the beginning. You can see his hand in the picture.
