My brother is an Astrophysicist. He was working in Iowa with the Cassini-Hyguens Sattlelite. He was transferred to Montana but is still working w/ the Cassini project.

It sounds like you have the same problem my brother does. He is "too qualified" for a lot of jobs. I mean, he really is a rocket scientist. He was offered jobs by NASA but turned them down, not sure why.

maybe use all that math you have learned and switch fields do math/stat.

there are plenty of opportunities in fields like industrial engineering/operations research that needs smart math nerds for doing optimization crap. you could look into the actuary field. maybe get a masters/phd in math and work in the investment banking field. maybe consider some advanced math/stats that lead you into financial engineer or economics or somthing like that?

maybe law school?

[/ QUOTE ]

That's what I'm doing with my degree in physics. Glad I made that choice.

Fact is physics doesn't pay well, especially considering the amount of post-graduate education required to get the good jobs. From the people I know, the career path in astrophysics is great if and only if you are both:

1) One of the best in the world at it; and

2) Totally in love with the subject.

I bailed during the application process for grad school. I'd taken a year off, and just didn't want to do it any more. Ask yourself if you really want to do astro for the rest of your life. If not, do something you do like. Employers love the physics degree: It screams "I'm really smart."

Yea but that's easier said than done. It's not like these jobs pay hundrends of thousands. I make more than my brother and I don't even have a college degree.

How is it selfish? Its expanding our knowledge base. Just because you may not be able to make a lot of money with it doesnt mean it isnt worth doing.

Maybe he finds it's interesting and want to learn about it, but does not want to do it for the rest of his life. I majored in physics and then went to law school. If anything I think it helped me separate myself from the average history major that applies to law school.
