I have never put sheets on a bed without washing them first. Do you also wear newly bought clothes without giving them a courtesy wash first as well?

[/ QUOTE ]

Depends on the clothing item/how desparate i am for clothing. sometimes yes, sometimes no.

[/ QUOTE ]
Can you please elaborate? Where do you draw the line on wash/don't wash for new clothing? New jeans? New t-shirt? New socks?

[/ QUOTE ]

New jeans I'll always wear without a wash.

New socks, if I'm desparate for socks (i.e. I bought them b/c I didn't have clean ones and needed them) then I'll wear straightup. Otherwise, new cotton socks, I'll go 50/50 depending on how fuzzy. If very fuzzy feeling, I'll send 'em through once, but it's not always necesary. New dress socks, I'll wear without a wash no problem.

T shirts I usually wash these before, but occasiaonally it'll feel alright and I'll just go with it. I'll usually be concious that it feels a bit different, but if I'm able not to care then I'll just go with it.

Dids,

this is false.

[/ QUOTE ]

Um... Thread count is a MAJOR factor is sheet softness. Only thing debatable is your minimum standards.

Has your mother weighed in on the cause of the scratchiness yet?

wacki,

thread counts reach a point to where you cannot tell the difference.

Also, the fibers and the finish of those fibers are what's truly important. It's fairly difficult to tell the difference between 400 TC sheets and 600 TC sheets.

400 thread count sheets are a min. Thread count is huge.

[/ QUOTE ]

While it's a matter of taste,400 thread count is very high and quite expensive. Cheap sheets are 180, and that will be quite rough. I personally find 250 to be adequate, but I like the sheets to be not so soft. The higher the thread count, the more expensive and the softer. High thread count 100% cotton sheets should probably be professionally laundered, or some of the mentioned problems will occur. If you want crisp sheets, 100% cotton needs to be ironed (although there are some 100% cotton sheets that are treated to be wrinkle-free).

So I got some new sheets and I find them to be a little abrasive. I slept on them no problem, but they're not overly comfortable/soft. After a washing will they be a lot better, or just a little?

[/ QUOTE ]

I bought some high thread count cotton sheets a while back. At first they were a little stiff but after a few washings they were perfect.

Also, always wash clothes/sheet/towels that touch your skin before using them. My Grandparents used to work in the old textile mills and saw enough so they made sure my Mom and her sister/brothers knew this.

I say 400 at a min because I'm reasonably confident a pimp like JBB can spring for some 400s.

My mother got me 400s for xmas and it's been fantastic.

She is also totally bemused by the fact that her son has conversations about thread count these days.
