I assume most floorpeople are dealers who moved up. Someone alluded to the fact that some floorpeople now don't have dealer experience. Are they now hiring colllege grad - "managment trainee" types, and sticking them in floor positions? Does this wreak havoc? On the flip side, is there a limit on how far you can move up the casino floor food chain without a degree?

Also, I know this is a poker-centric board, but from a career perspective, is poker dealing - managing the way to go for a casino career? Poker is something of a side issue for the casinos from a profit perspective. Would it be better to deal house banked games, and try to move up that path? Is there alot of cross movement between the pit and the poker room?

Most(all) floors here started as dealers. A lot of them almost never deal anymore, less than five times a year.

This is a problem.

Yes, there are management types moving in. And also Pit and Floor bosses from other games moving into the poker room.

Although the "poker-centric" see the floor's duties as one of ruling on hands and disputes, they ignore some of the more important (to the casino) duties they perform.

Little things like ensuring all money that is supposed to be dropped in the drop boxes, gets dropped. Or all chips raked out of a pot actually make it into the rake box. Or all chips in the dealer tray are accounted for and don't mysteriously disappear.

Secondarly, that the deal is fair to all players, and some dealer's friends don't get incredibly "lucky" with the cards they draw, or seem to know what the next card to come is going to be.

You also would need someone to make schedules, insure breaks are taken at proper times, vacations and days off are approved, scheduled, and still have enough people show up to run the games, etc.

A lot of these skills are used elsewhere in the casino, or where lots of money changes hands, and some are pure management skills having nothing to do with poker.
