When I was 13 years old I was walking with my friends towards a railway crossing. We were still a fair bit away when the lights started flashing and the barriers started coming down. Being a stupid kid with a death wish I decided that I was going to sprint down the road and beat the train. I ran full speed and as I was approaching the train tracks the conductor blew the horn, which startled me and caused me to trip and fall onto the tracks.

I somehow managed to get up and leap off the tracks about a millisecond before the train was going to hit me. It actually brushed me slightly as I leapt out of the way. All of my friends thought that I had gotten hit and thrown, they couldn't believe that I'd gotten up and moved quickly enough to avoid the train.

I still get a little queasy thinking about how close I came to getting smucked.

I'm curious now. Can you repost his story in this thread? The archive server is blocked by my work's firewall for some reason.

fishing when I was 12 at a local pier. Idiot with a 12 foot pole decided it would be a good idea to cast sideways instead of over his head. 6 oz. pyramid shaped weight hit me just under the temple, cut me to the skull, ripped my ear in half and then came out. Multiple veins and arteries were cut. The veins were spraying a fine mist of blood (I could see it spraying), arteries were pumping blood about 15 feet. I honestly thought there's no way i'd live. Guy that hit me immediately took off his shirt and pressed it to my head really really hard. I lost about 2 pints, but an ambulance ride and 500 stitches later, I made it.

wow, thats really wierd how the guy who almost killed you saved your life.

bacterial meningitis...
Almost decided to "sleep it off" instead of going to the hospital to see why my damn neck was so stiff and I felt like my body was one big ache. I was thoroughly owned by the whole experience but did live. Spinal taps suck.

[/ QUOTE ]

goodness. i had viral meningitis when i was around 14. i cant believe you survived bacterial - that stuff is vicious and kills in like a day. the spinal tap didnt bother me because the rest of my body hurt so badly, especially my head.
