Ryan,

I am obviously in favor of as large as possible so I can continue to make avatars for people from youtube clips.

Are you sure hosting avatars for ~100,000 users is in the best interest of the site?

Obviously if you are going to be hosting them on your own server... server load/bandwith will go up.... Hopefully that doesn't crash the CPU/over use bandwidth allocation like the infamous refresh thread did.

It's difficult for me to directly relate UBB experience to how things will run with the server and database dealing with vB. Regardless, one of the reasons you haven't seen vB yet is that we're taking our time to give you guys the easiest and best transition we can.

Also, I should mention that vB is intentionally designed not to allow remote avatars.

When is the forum switchover tentatively or definitively scheduled for?

Right now we're looking at the first part of november. I'll have a clearer answer on that in the announcement this weekend.

Might as well address this now. The way all of this is handled on 2+2 is going to change in the near future. With vB we will be hosting instead of using remote avatars. There are benefits to doing it that way for us, including the process being somewhat safer and more user friendly. But we'll obviously have to set a real limit somewhere. While the final number has yet to be decided, it's most likely going to be somewhere between 150 and 350.

Expect to see a more detailed announcement about what else you guys should know about the switch later this weekend.

To compensate us for this violation of our avatar rights, you could enable signatures, so we can have BIGGER, LONGER animated gifs that will ANNOY people MORE!!!!

By far the most disturbing part of that avatar is how that thing slowly turns and looks at you for a second before running towards you.
