Re: Only 18 year olds are allowed to vote in South Carolina
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] It doesn't explicitly say "between now and election day". [/ QUOTE ] Yes it does. [/ QUOTE ] Um...no it doesn't. We can argue the interpretation all day long, but the EXPLICIT wording is indisputable. And it doesn't explicitly say "between now and election day". |

Re: Only 18 year olds are allowed to vote in South Carolina
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] It doesn't explicitly say "between now and election day". [/ QUOTE ] Yes it does. The verb "be" is used in conjunction with the present singular verb "will". As it is written, the sentence can only refer to the time period from the present. I realize this has degenerated into an English argument on a Politics forum so I'll let this thread die. Sorry! [/ QUOTE ] You know those signs that say, "You must be this tall to ride"? They don't mean you have to be that specific height. |

This kind of wording may explain how they've been able to. [/ QUOTE ] you don't get to make jokes like this when you are so, so wrong. i turned 18 three years ago. I was 18 before election day, therefore I can vote. |

Obviously the discussion is pretty pointless since everyone understands what they mean. Still yet, to me, the term "will be" is asking about something that has yet to occur. Will you ever be 18? not Have you ever been 18. |

[ QUOTE ]
Q: Will I be 18 before the election? A: Yes [/ QUOTE ] I think you are interpreting the question as being "Will I have been 18 before the election." Obviously I could be wrong and it doesn't really matter anyway. |

Re: Only 18 year olds are allowed to vote in South Carolina
Will you be stinky on or before your 5th birthday?
Maybe if I can somehow go back to or before my 5th B-day, yep! OP is right, "Will you be: ?" is only asking facts about the future. (specifically some future feature of your being) One feature you will have when you are 50 is having been 18 years old. However you will not have the feature that you will be 18 years old on some date. Will the Yankees be world champions on or before tomorrow? Nope. |
