i'm in the EXACT same spot as you House.

for cash savings account, ICICI is offering 4.5%. In terms of investing in ETFs for a canadian, check out this link:

I also opened up an E*Trade account- cheapest per trade commission that I could find.

Thanks very much for that link Flint that looks like the exact sort of thing I'm interested in doing. Is it ok to just start out with $10k to get my feet wet or am I better off starting with a larger sum so that fees don't kill me?

i am defiantly not an expert but I would figure that 10k invested in such a manner (long term) would suffice. but again, i am far from an expert.
