Re: Gaining muscle / burning fat dichotomy... am I missing something?
i've already been doing squats 3 days a week for over a month lol
i didn't start doing them with weight for awhile though, now when i do squats i usually do like 5 reps with weight and then 5 reps with no weight where i focus on form and go much more slowly (edit: maybe actually more than 5 of each i don't remember lol) i have a personal trainer who i feel is helping me a lot but he's definitely the type who wants to keep me as in the dark as he can get away with because he doesn't want his customer to become enough independent of him to be able to lift on his own... which is why i come here a lot with these types of questions. i also told him yesterday that one of my most important long term goals is to do 3 sets of 10 pullups unassisted (which i am not remotely close to right now)... hopefully that will keep me doing a lot of the things that i see you guys talking about on this forum also; while i've been doing squats all the time i haven't done one pure deadlift. i have been doing this though (every once in awhile): Barbell Straight-back Stiff-leg Deadlift |

[/ QUOTE ] Drop this piece of sh it as soon as possible. With this kind of trainer you can never be sure if you getting the best advice. There are lots of sites that can get you up and running with a good program without having to put up with this crap. I would suggest: Bodybuilding.com T-nation.com wannabebigforums.com Plus i'm sure there are tons of other places that offer great advice. |

You might want to cut back to only twice a week once in a while, to keep your recovery going, but that's up to you. Doing lots of squats should help you put on enough muscle that your metabolism stays higher throughout the day and your weight becomes easier to drop even if you're eating the same amount. |

Re: Gaining muscle / burning fat dichotomy... am I missing something?
Sorry if this is a hijack. I'm sort of in the same boat except I really want to focus more on fat loss. Can someone please explain to me what the 24-50 concept on this page means? I've read it twice and I don't know what he's referring to.
Also under fat loss, he gives this advice: Parameters such as 4 x 6, 4 x 8, 5 x 5, 5 x 6, etc. all work well to maintain (or increase) mass during hypocaloric eating phases. Does that mean 8 sets of 4 reps? Because above he uses 12 x 3, which has to mean 3 sets of 12 reps right? Or am I just completely lost? |

[/ QUOTE ] this just means that the total number of reps is between 25-50... and CW uses a lot of high set/low rep schemes...his beginner program Anti-Bodybuilding Hypertrophy is a combo of using 5x10 (5 sets 10 reps) and 10x3 (10 sets 3 reps)... |

Re: Gaining muscle / burning fat dichotomy... am I missing something?
I really want to burn fat, but I don't like spending 3 hours at the gym. Do you think I can get by with a 3 x 10 kind of thing for most exercises?
