El Yunque National Forest is the only rain forest in the US park system. You might want to give that a go.

It's a bit further than you asked for but I have to recommend the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota

The US side alone is over a million acres and you have to get a permit (limited) to go there. I was there for 10 days with 3 buddies and we only saw 2 other people the entire time.

Positives:
Awesome fishing (you can take some fishing line right?)
No need for water purification tablets
Tons of bears

Negatives:
Distance
Tons of bears

I've been there. I was about to mention it. Hot as hell this time of year, and at some point in a week's time you'll run into Border Patrol and they'll have some questions for you.

Probably laws that prevent hunting in the park.
