actually, I like the malibu or west hills idea. the only places i would live in LA would be the palisades, or somewhere between manhattan and redondo beach. everything else blows.

There are plenty of pretty nice, clean places in Burbank, and it's right next to North Hollywood. There's a gigantic park in the Burbank area too. There are some nice little areas where people gather, too, and plenty of stores of all types.

Encino is further away, west, but also very relaxed, and there are lots of little shops where people walk about, and some good delis and ethnic eateries of various types. Plenty of good stores of all types around. Tarzana is a bit west of that and more expensive in some places. There are odd bits of Section 8 housing in Encino and Tarzana, but they can be stayed away from relatively easily. There are also nice parks near to Encino and Tarzana.

If you're going to work in North Hollywood, I definitely would not live anywhere but the Valley. L.A. traffic going over the hill can be VERY bad, and it absolutely will affect the quality of your life to sit in the hot traffic day after day, and lose all that time. Plus it will put a lot of wear and tear on your car.

You can also go further east to Pasadena and Glendale, but rents rise very sharply there. Some areas of Glendale can be very Armenian, which can make things feel a bit insular, but if you're the typical Angeleno, you don't know your neighbors anyway, so it might not matter.

Yes, those areas are nice, but they are bucks, and a good ways away from north hollywood, where he works. Love the Palisades, tho.

But Orange County is much nicer overall.

try something along or close to the water as thats where the toxic smog is the least by a large amount. and the so called nicer people live if they can afford it. manhattan beach or sanra monica is great and can get to freeways for casinos.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah yeah thanks, brings up another question. I dig lower stakes NLHE and PLO (buyin for a grand tops). Where do I want to play?

[/ QUOTE ]

The Commerce. The Bicycle Club isn't too far from that, but much more run down, and the other card casinos are far smaller. There's another casino, Hollywood Park, but the floor personnel were horrifically bad when I used to go there, and the rakes were too high for the crappy service and attitude and how crowded the tables were. Ugly.

All these are quite a trip from the valley, and even going there from downtown can sometimes be a nightmare. You might get there in 20 minutes, or you might get there in an hour from downtown, depending on traffic. Lotta L.A. traffic is like that.

Valley Village ftw! I lived there, but I called it N. Hollywood. Stick to the N.Hollywood/Studio City area and you'll be fine. You might even look at Laurel Canyon or something if you want to live in the hills. I actually enjoyed my time in the valley. I love the dry heat and warm nights. Redondo is always gooky and very rarely warm at night.

And there were a TON of aspiring young actess/models/porn starlets in my neighborhood. Everyday going to Starbucks I'd see 3 or 4 of the kind of girls you see maybe once a month in Kansas City. The ones that just knock the wind out of you. I know I saw some porn deals go down at that Starbucks. It was like all the girls you knew in your life, only the super hot, skinny, big-boobed version of them.

N. Hollywood is decent. My uncle has lived there for years off of Lankersheim. Have friends who live in the Valley off of Ventura near the Bucca de Beppa (not sure the exact city as drove to there and away from there) and there area is really nice.

if you like Bucca de Beppa, Olive Garden, etc, then by all means you might like to live in the Valley.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not saying it is my favorite place. Using it as a landmark as maybe some of you SoCal-ians would know the city name, as the area around their home was nice.

Ventura Blvd. has some awesome restaurants. Casa Vega and Mexicali are two of my favorites in LA, and it has the best sushi place in LA - Sushi Nozawa. I agree just about everywhere else in the valley sucks. But Ventura is nice. Oh yeah this place may be the best pizza in LA - http://joepeeps.com/. Home of the 5969 calorie giant pizza. I like the thin crust one, which is still huge. Mmmmm I miss those giant olives. And I did get chili fries at Tommy's way too much. Ugh.

Yup. Many many gorgeous girls in the valley. And much less racial tension, and tension in general, in most of it. L.A. can have a very tense attitude. Good place to pretend you're slick, but if you get tired of that crap, lots of places in the valley will let you just be more mellow and not feel like you have to join the douchebag club to fit in.

QFMFT. L.A. traffic is bad enough, and traffic on the 405 near the Sepulveda pass is probably as consistently bad as it gets. If you're working in North Hollywood, I'd make sure I lived somewhere close to the 101, or north, if need be. Do not live anywhere around the 405 south of the pass, you'll probably hate life.

Actually come to think of it, you don't want to spend any time on the 101/134/170 either. Just bring a sleeping bag in with you to work and save on rent AND time stuck in traffic. But seriously, live as close as possible to work. L.A. traffic is no joke.
