Also, it wasn't a specific shot at him. This is a fairly standard play for me in the SB, and I actually have never looked up to see how the hand fares in that position. When considering 3betting a hijack raise with ATo, you have to put your opponent on a hand range that is worse than yours. This is clearly not the case here, even if opponent is like 31/23. I guess one way to think about it is to think of what you'd 3bet a button raise with. A7o? Maybe A6o? Now go back two positions, the worst I'd 3bet with is AJo, some suited broadway hands, and occasionally KQo. KQo and KJo I'm calling in the SB most likely. [/ QUOTE ] Your approach is too simplistic. Consider how your equity changes if the BB calls. Consider if the BB is good or sucks postflop. Most of the time the value gained with getting the pot HU will outweigh whatever you're giving up by 3-betting his range. The way you're looking at it (at least, in the post above) is like as if you were playing in a live game and the BB was telegraphing a fold (or else folded out of turn). |
