Your approach is too simplistic. Consider how your equity changes if the BB calls. Consider if the BB is good or sucks postflop.

Most of the time the value gained with getting the pot HU will outweigh whatever you're giving up by 3-betting his range.

The way you're looking at it (at least, in the post above) is like as if you were playing in a live game and the BB was telegraphing a fold (or else folded out of turn).
