[ QUOTE ] The connoisseurs would cringe when I mix it with green tea [/ QUOTE ] Very righly so. Who the f mixes cognac!? [/ QUOTE ] Not the high-range stuff but a mid-range cognac and ginger ale (a Horse's neck) is fantastic. Brandy actually makes some fantastic cocktails. Sidecars, etc. |

I've never had a proper cognac, but the cheaper ones taste like charcoal filtered gasoline to me. Since that was like 15 years ago, and I've developed a taste for single malt scotch, how would a good cognac compare? Also, used to have balla friend who was young and rich and would order Louis XIII and a coke and then proceed to dump the cognac into the coke. Horrified the other patrons. [/ QUOTE ] I love a good scotch myself and I occasional drink cognac although I prefer Armagnac. Cognac is grape based, primarily ugni blanc, and will be ‘fruitier” than scotch. Armagnac is also grape based, same grapes as cognac, but from a different region and this gives it an earthier flavor. I have found, much like scotch, the cheap/young stuff is hard to swallow. As the cognac is aged it starts to mellow and soften much like an 18 year scotch. If my memory is correct VS is aged in barrels 2yrs, VSOP 4yrs, and XO 6yrs. The ultra high end stuff like the Louis XIII is aged much longer probably 20 or more years. I don’t think Cognac is not permitted to be bottled by year(vinatge) but I think Armagnac is. Is your buddy Asian? Mixing cognac and coke used to be very popular in Asia. |

[ QUOTE ]
I used to frequent Lou's Pub (from that thread about the 50 best bars in the country) and had it a couple of times as a gift from Lou. I'm not a big cognac fan but thought it was pretty good stuff. Lou (who I think got about $50 c. 1997, a snifter for it)) used to put all the names of the people who bought it into a jar and when the bottle was empty he would draw a name and give the winner the bottle. Evidently it's some kind of bad ass crystal. [/ QUOTE ] Theres a bar here in town called O connels, Im there one night talking to teh bartender and he tells me the following story: see that bottle of louis up there me: ya him: thats teh 2nd bottle weve gone through this month me: BS him: ya, but heres the grip, we hired a new bartender and a couple of funny guys came in, and decided to mess with her, and asked how much for a shot of that cool looking stuff in teh glass case. She told them normal shot price probably- 5 or 6$. Their jaws dropped and they proceeded to drink the whole bottle. Then they asked for teh bottle so they could put their pennies in it when they get home, she obliged. They ebayed it for like a couple hundred bucks. |

F the haters, I'm balla, and delicious. [/ QUOTE ] I actually liked this. Ok so I'm starting to gather I probably shouldn't go for this until I've had more cognacs. Brandy sounds interesting too, I've actually never had it. List of good, basic Brandy/Cognacs to try before I blow 1.4k on this stuff? |

If you like cognac you must drink it at least once. Maybe you could sample it first. Most high-end restaurants offer it.
Also, I suspect the folks down-talking Louis are not regular drinkers of cognac. |
