The term Hispanic is a cultural term referring to Spanish speaking people. Brazilians, as Portuguese speaking people, are clearly not Hispanic, which isn't a race anyways.

"LATIN" happy? punk

[/ QUOTE ]

There are lots of people from Latin America that are of European descent, like pretty much all of Argentina. Deco was born in Brazil, but it's very likely that his parents/ grandparents/ whatever were from Portugal, and Portuguese people are usually classified as white.

But then again most Portuguese people, like many Southern Europeans, are pretty dark because of the Moorish influence on Southern Europe.

also, Zidane is a berber, right? berbers are usually pretty light-skinned. Their link to brown-skinned people like Arabs are based more on language and religion than they are on genetics.

I think this thread highlights the ridiculousness of classifying people into a few narrow ethnic categories. Just my $0.02

Are you sure he doesnt have dual citizenship, i thought if you play for your country in the Olympics you had to be a citzen (or something like that).

Wikipedia bio "He was born in the Florida neighborhood of the Vicente López Partido, Greater Buenos Aires, next to Buenos Aires."

I looked on the Spanish Wikipedia page and it listed Argentina and Italy for citizenship.

I don't think this is true.

Although on ancestry he could have just one Italian grandmother or something. I'm not exactly sure how that works but for sure he doesn't have to be all Italian.

However, as kdawg pointed out his name seems much more Italian than Spanish.

Crespo kind of seems to have a touch of swarthiness about him. If so, we don't, apparently, know if that's from an indigenous South American family part or from a southern Italian--ie, partly Moorish--part. Not sure how much difference it would make.

italy has been fairly strict in the past with getting citizenship for footballing purposes (it could be different now as my recollection of the rule goes back to the late 90s and I haven't really followed italian football since). I think it used to be that you had to have a grandparent on both sides to get citizenship for footballing. I remember there being a big deal when Veron got italian citizenship because his ancestary was a bit weak( i think it was a great grandparent, and even that was in question)
