It was a joke, but his strikeout total is meaningless. [/ QUOTE ] Because they're accounted for by other, more intrinsically meaningful stats? |

[ QUOTE ] It was a joke, but his strikeout total is meaningless. [/ QUOTE ] Because they're accounted for by other, more intrinsically meaningful stats? [/ QUOTE ] Yes it's accounted for in outs made, which is a much more important and meaningful stat. For example. 2006 Strikeouts Outs Bases Ryan Howard 181 399 383 Juan Pierre 38 495 271 Howard creates almost a base for every out he makes at the plate. Pierre strikes out one fifth as often as Howard, but creates only half a base for each out he makes at the plate. And Pierre hit .292 last year! Who cares how often Howard strikes out. You'd rather he replaced 100 strike outs with 100 ground outs? |

howard fooled everyone last year, but he's still a ridic good player whom any team would love to have except for that team in missouri. [/ QUOTE ] We'll take him as well and move Pujols back to OF or 3rd, his natural position. |

Re: Ryan Howard Strikeout Watch
[ QUOTE ]
One thing I'd like to point out here is Dunn's Ks are off the charts this year. He's whiffing about 30.6% of the time, whereas last year was his previous career high at 28.4%. His carrer rate was 26.7% coming into the year, and he had been fairly consistent around 25% until last year. On top of that, his unintentional walk rate is down to 11.6% from a career norm of 14.6%. He had been fairly consistent in that category until this season. If he were to mantain his BABIP and HR/FB%, his line would look something like .220/.310/.485. The Ks are starting to hurt Adam Dunn. [/ QUOTE ] Yes he's on pace to shatter his own single season K record, but his BABIP is up 40 points this year from his career average. That's roughly keeping his OBP at about his norm. |

strikeouts are weird because you can't look at them retrospectively and say 'whoa that guy sucked', but you can use them as a predictor that a guy may suck in the future. howard fooled everyone last year, but he's still a ridic good player whom any team would love to have except for that team in missouri. James [/ QUOTE ] I don't know, I think the Royals would love to have a hitter of Howard's caliber. (Actually, if they really could get a guy that could be counted on to hit HRs, I think their offense would become really good. Billy Butler, we need you.) |
