Default Re: Top Pair OOP against LAG

going back to the advice of Harrington on Hold'em V1

either rope-a-dope or Hammer

in this case, rope-a-dope
call flop
call turn
lead out for 1/2 pot or such on river if he hasn't been betting near full pot
or call river if he has been betting huge

basically, you don't want to hammer cuz it might push him out of the pot on a weaker ace or underpair (99-KK) or bluff

That flop is very, very safe for you (rainbow with no good straight draw)
You aren't risking much by giving him chances to catch cards
You are likely ahead of his range (sure 22, 88, AK, A8, and A2 beat you, but that is a small portion of his range)
It's time to get paid off by AJ, etc

rope-a-dope the LAG

I would play for stacks here most likely

except, what is with only going to showdown 3 times in 100 hands...that is scary....i hope that is wrong

No, I'm completely serious. This is Party, NL10. The games are loose. I have the PT stats.

Thanks everyone for the posts. I ended up re-raising the flop all in and he folded. I knew afterwards that I made a mistake as I would most likely only be called by a hand that had me dominated.

I have 20k hands at $10 buy in on Party this month and the average VPIP is 21.3 and PF raise is 7.4 so I dont agree that the Party games are all that loose at this limit. If you filter the data for players with at least 50 hands and they only get tighter down to 19% VPIP

Facing the raise on the flop, what is the next step? I had about 100 hands on him and he was 0 for 3 on showdowns.

EDIT: misread hand: thought you raised PF an he flat called. For the real hand, I like Jeff's and MYTurns recommendations.

Given the read, I think we beat his range. Thus, whether we call or raise depends on whether his worse hands will call, not raise or fold. Three Ax beat us, we beat nine, more than three of which should at least call. But will villain raise say ATo? If I get four bet I'm going to be very unhappy and will tend to fold.

So my conclusion: if you three bet and are comfortable calling or pushing, then three bet. But if you will fold or are uncertain what to do, then just call. Since I am in the pessimistic/unsure (should I be, its your villain afterall?) category, I'll call.

That is extremely weird. Over 13,500 hands for the same period I have average stats of 52.48/18.67. Regulars are 45/20. It's not that unusual to see players play every single hand until they bust out.

We must be parallel universes - what time of day do you play? I play mostly 7am-lunchtime CET. I don't play afternoons because the games are noticeably tighter.

I am in Australia so I mainly play from 5 to 7 am EST USA on week nights and at any time on weekends between 5 pm and 7 am EST USA. I am getting my data off the summary tab in PT.

What is CET? I want to play then. Sounds juicy!
