[ QUOTE ] 2 starts last year in the playoffs and performed fine. (12 innings, 3.00 era.) Strange. Did a few months of offseason make that much difference? [/ QUOTE ] small sample size alert [/ QUOTE ] Oh no question about that. Just saying that I think he does have it in him to be an effective major leaguer. |

2 starts last year in the playoffs and performed fine. (12 innings, 3.00 era.) Strange. Did a few months of offseason make that much difference? Maybe he's one of those AAAA players (a la Ruben Rivera) who just can't make the jump. Oh, and the Cards offense is horrible. I'm sure that's cost him at least a few wins. [/ QUOTE ] the Cards offense has likely cost him as it has helped Wellemeyer the problem is the few times the Cards do score early, Reyes doesn't even hold the lead for a half inning. Give him a lead and he crumbles. There is something wrong with that. He pitches just bad enough to lose in every scenario. It's like watching a less talented version and less explosive version of Rick Ankiel all over again. |

On an interesting sidenote, I just looked up Anthony Young's career stats. How on Earth did he manage to go 1-16 with a 3.77 ERA in '93? 15-48 w/ 3.89 over his career. [/ QUOTE ] in fairness to Mr. Young, he got incredibly unlucky. regardless: 3.77 was closer to league average back then, it seems to have been 3.92, and pitching at Shea makes him about league average. furthermore, he gave up 62 runs (42 earned) in 102 innings, making his RA well above 5. One wonders how the Mets managed to average an unearned run every five innings he pitched. |
