Yeah, the first time one of those nits just check/called down on every street and showed me AA, my jaw dropped - I was just stunned, a monster overpair wasn't even on my radar. I think the first time it happened I made a coment like 'where the hell was the raise? You're supposed to raise that PF so I can fold my KQ.' - I normally don't talk much at all, but I was just so suprised.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've had this happen a few times online lately. I just shrug & thank them for winning the minimum from me.

Default Re: optimal strategy for tight-typical/passive live game

[ QUOTE ]
What you want to do against a bunch of tight/passive opponents (aside from asking for a table change) is to convince them that you are not a tight, passive, reasonable player. That doesn't mean that you go all maniacal on the table & start raising every hand--you pick your spots, and take advantage of them.

I believe that it was Hellmuth who told a story in one of his books (yes, I read his book) about a guy who would sit at one of his regular casino games, a fairly high stakes one, and for his entire first orbit do nothing but raise. This of course cost him quite a bit of money in the long run, the few suckouts and times when he really did have a hand aside, but this guy just saw it as one of the costs of doing business. And the result of this crazy play was invariably that the entire table would loosen up for the remainder of his game--people never knew if he really did have a hand or if he was just trying to bully them out of the pot again, someone would raise a weak or marginal holding to isolate on him and then another player would in turn reraise with a weak or marginal holding knowing that the first guy was trying to isolate...end result, the table was no longer tight/passive.

[/ QUOTE ]

To quote Mr. Spock: (left eyebrow raised) "Fascinating."

If the table is passive and tight, you need to tighten up preflop, but you can loosen up on semi-bluff and bluffing a bit and steal a few additional pots.

[/ QUOTE ]

Depends on how weak they are. If they're limping big cards and always c/fing hands worse than top pair then I'm raising a lot of SCs and tiny pairs from late positions. Build a pot and then steal it with a cbet.

[ QUOTE ]
The only exception maybe being AQo, which is a pretty good hand to limp-reraise. (hence all the hands where I limped big pairs earlier)

[/ QUOTE ]

AQo seems like the worst possible hand to lrr against nits (wait until you know it's dominated and then 3bet it OOP?)

Christian: While I agree those types of games are annoying and hard to adjust to, you should be able to play at least as many hands as normal provided you are actually capable of exploiting their stupidity by properly adjusting. Mostly you stop bluffing once it's obvious they have a hand, value bet the river FAR less than you're used to, and make more folds. Oh, and consider slowplaying once in awhile. If they're only limping big pairs and big cards, then you can tell what kinds of flops they are likely to miss. If they're limping both hands as good as AA and hands as bad as 76s then they are leaking preflop and you should be able to take advantage of it.
