I recommend everybody watch Paddy Chayefsky's "The Hospital". It's truely awe-inspiring when a social commentary is still relevant 30+ years later.

A big problem with the insurance companies is that they spend a ridiculous amount of time and money trying to avoid paying for someone's claim. If they can get off on a technicality or there is any question whatsoever, they won't pay. So even if you have insurance, you aren't really covered a lot of times.

If someone eats twinkies everyday and needs a open heart surgery, should I pay?
If someone drinks till their liver rots and needs a transplant, should I pay?
If someone likes to skateboard and break his knee, should I pay?
If someone OD's on heroin/coke/etc, should I pay?

I do think that it is in our societies interest to keep citizens healthy. However, people need to be at least partially accountable for their health. I think preventative/prenatal healtcare with incentives to stay fit and be hygenic and healthly is necessary. Those who bring poor health on themselves, should have to pay. I don't mind subsizing a medical care loan program for those without upfron means, but I'm not outright paying for a smoker to get treated for lung cancer. If people were required to pass physical fitness test every 6 months to receive free care, we as a society would benefit.

The problem is that we're paying for a lot of these things already. If we had some kind of universal health care coverage, people would get a lot more preventative care and we'd stop a lot of these cases from developing.

The "preventative care" fatasses would get would be gastric bypass or something that (gasp) will still cost fucktons.

I'm suggesting that if people don't pass their physicals, they have to take out federal loans/pay for care. This is part of prevention.

I think everyone is entitled to a full physical/dental cleaning/blood test every 6 months.

I'm pretty sure gastric bypass and other luxury/cosmetic operations aren't covered in most universal health care systems. It's very rare for such a procedure to be medically necessary.

Best part of the movie was the soviet propaganda film

We have raised our wheat
because work is our honor
And if our humble efforts
Should bring us an award

We would not refuse it!
We answer: we can use it!

Harvest! Harvest! Keep loading, loading
The quota has been attained!

This is our harvest, our rich harvest..

We are your fireman,
We save lives, and cats from trees.

We are the teachers of America,
where kids go to school for free.

We are your postal service,
where you get your mail for cheap.

And here at the library,
you can get your book for free.
