For late night hotdogs, go to the Weiner Circle. They'll probably call you a little bitch and overcharge you, but it'll be a great experience. Also, order the chocolate milk shakes...$20 and not on the menu...once again, great experience.

I just ate here last week. The hot dogs weren't good, and the fries were inedible. I've heard great things about the milk shake though.

The 5 other hot dogs I had around the city at various places were all great. I do not know how this place stays in business. I don't think it's safe to eat whatever that cheese stuff is either.

Then again, some people bust like it. I don't know how, but they do.

(what can I say, I like architecture).

Architecture Boat Tour FTW. You go down the River and see a lot of really cool buildings with a good tour guide. I've never meet anybody who hasn't thouroughly enjoyed it.

I second The Weiner Circle as well. Dogs are very good, not the best but the atmosphere is worth seeing. Order a char-dog, cheese fry & a chocolate shake and enjoy.

From 12 Midnight to 4AM this place is usually packed with drunk partrons. It's more of an atmosphere thing than I food think I'm sure, though I actually am a fan of the food. I do like the hot dogs...though I'm not really a connoisseur . I find the cheese to be amazing. It's really thick...almost gritty, much better than the normal nacho cheese [censored] you get on cheese fries, though I know a lot of people don't like it.

I'm catchin some flack for the Portillos dogs....It would just be easy to find for a out of towner.

[/ QUOTE ]

screw that. portillos is great. you think the others do anything different to their chicago dogs? aside from, maybe a different pickle or relish. i'll say it. i love portillos.

their chili dogs are fan-frickin-tastic. their beefs delicious.

i grew up on this [censored] in the suburbs, and you might find a place that has a better beef, or combo, or hot dog, or whatever. but i agree with you. easy to find, and guaranteed to please.

[/ QUOTE ]

OK, so I liked Portillos a lot, except for the chili dogs. Is it a Chicago thing to put beans in the chili for a hot dog? I actually had an argument with my girlfriend about that.

Me: "WTF, there are beans in this thing."

Her: "Chili has beans. A chili dog has chili on it. Therefore it has beans."

Me: "This must be a Chicago thing. I've eaten thousands of chili dogs and never once got a bean."

Her: "How can you not expect to get beans in chili?"

Me: "Because it's on a hot dog, and because chili with beans in it is pretty gross anyhow."

Her: "Then why do you get chili dogs?"

Me: "Because the other 5000 chili dogs I've ordered in the past never had me eating a bean."

Her: "They don't have chili on them, then."

Me: "This would be like me calling you an idiot for wanting anything other than a steamed chihuahua with a bun tacked to its ass when ordering a hot dog, as you obviously have no idea what a dog is."

You get the idea. Please inform me which other cities and restaurants don't see a difference between whatever this beanful chili stuff is and the stuff people put on chili dogs.

Alright, so here's a trip report for the past couple days I've spent in Chicago. My flight is delayed so I am the cool kid using his laptop in the bar...

Nothing truly outrageous happened, but I figured I'd just give my impressions on the area and the places I got to visit.

First thing I noticed is that Cicero Ave is pretty ghetto... but I did find a Chipotle, so it evens out. this was the first time I've had Chipotle (I think it was built up too much by my friends from the midwest. I don't see how it's any better than Qdoba except that they serve beer (always a good thing)).

Next I went to the University of Chicago to see the Robie House (built by Lloyd Wright, an awesome piece of architecture). what I saw of the campus was very impressive, very beautiful neighborhood that made me wish I had gone to school in Chicago.

Next item of notice was a trip to the Hancock building, first thing that impressed me was that I found a parking spot by the Drake Hotel like 3 blocks away (2 bucks for 2 hours at a meter, that's freakin awesome). then I got some kind of Thai fast food at the building next to the Hancock which cost me 7 bucks (at this point I'm astounded, 2 hours parking and a meal for $9!? try to find that in Boston or Manhattan...). So I head up the elevator, and let me tell you when you walk out into the lounge on the 96th floor it's prtetty frikkin sweet. I watched the sunset and took a bunch of pictures, sent a phone pic to my friends showing my beer (goose island, pretty good) with the sears tower as a backdrop, it was art.)

Next I went to check out Clark St. and got stuck in traffic as the game let out, but Clark street was sweet, tons of bars and restaurants and hot, happy, female, cubs fans. I revisited Clark street The next night and in my typical fashion found like the seediest dive bar around (Friar Tuck, though it was still kind of fun, the barteder took it upon himself to intro me to all the girls in the bar (and now I am going to expect all my local bartenders to do this for me, (I'm lazy...)).

the last afternoon I stopped at Pequod's for pizza. First off, that place is awesome. Pizza and Fat Tire Ale on tap. I was pleased. The pizza was very good, but not fundamentally different from New England pizza, I guess I was expecting chicago pizza to be like 10X better or something.

So other than working and spending a bunch of time in traffic that's about it for my Chicago experience.

overall I'm impressed, I like the place, and found some really good neighborhoods, though I bet rent is pretty high (a place between clark and broadway would be AWESOME). I'll probably end up back here before long as my company is starting to do a lot of business in the area.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, they all worked out pretty well.

Edit: My adventures in Chicago might not be over yet, a cute girl just sat down next to me, full TR with pics to follow if I end up in the airport bathroom (though the odds of that are probably worse than the odds of my plane crashing (SWA flight 198, if you see that flight # on the news then assume I got lucky, and then call up the dictionary people and get my picture next to irony)

the food is pretty good, but it is one of the cornerstones of the infamous viagra triangle. you are probably too young to be hanging out around there.
