Re: Prepping for \"the jump\"
I made the move about a month ago. Pretty much every aspect of 10/20 is tougher than 5/10. I've played 150k hands at 3/6, 100k at 5/10, and I it wasn't until 20k hands into 10/20 that I finally made it into the 300 club, with a handsome -362 bb downswing. I've played 50k hands at 10/20 as of now (just recently popped out of the downswing), and wouldn't be comfortable with anything less than 1000 BBs.

Re: Prepping for \"the jump\"
Just want to reiterate Josh's recommendation to acquaint yourself with the call button.

acquaint yourself with the call button [/ QUOTE ] Like metetron said, this is key. You'd be surprised how much air is being pumped. Also, listen to Dean. Try to carefully game select and only play in a few REALLY good ones. The 30/20s (GOOD LUCK against sweeta111 when you don't have the nuts....the guy's software came without a call button) at this level will often make you see red rats because they don't seem to have any regard for money. You'll need to hit/get some hands with decent showdown value or you're jerked. |

Re: Prepping for \"the jump\"
Hey MTDoak,
How did this work out for you? After much searching, I found this thread. I remembered looking it at back in February. I ask because I'm making the move right now. I have been successful 4-tabling 5/10. On Friday and Saturday, I mixed in a couple of 10/20 tables and had a good run. Of course, on Sunday, I fired up 4 10/20s right off the bat and got spanked. Just looking for some reassurance I guess. |

Re: Prepping for \"the jump\"
Start with good table selection, just one 10/20 table that's got a VPIP about what you'd see at 5/10.
The biggest problem for me was psychological since the 5/10 -> 10/20 just gave me "pot size" angst which affected my play. "My god, I'm down $100! I lost a $250 pot!" The 2/4->3/6->5/10 have more gradual increases and the adjustment wasn't so bad. |

Re: Prepping for \"the jump\"
One thing you might consider is to play 5/10 for at least another month or so, intentionally playing with very aggressive opponents. Surround yourself with lots of LAGs, borderline maniacs, and of course full blown maniacs if you can find them. The overplaying TAGs are everywhere so you wont have to seek them out, but playing with them would be a good idea too. With this approach you will get a close approximation of the 10/20 aggression with dollar swings that are more manageable.

I am in the same boat like you. I set aside 150 BB in Party to take a shot at 10/20 mainly during weekends. My first session I was overwhelmed by the agression and a lot of times feeling like a scared puppy. Look at this hand. The turn raise was a misclick not unlikely due to high adrenaline level. (I was like: "I'm not folding you XXXX". Before I knew the "raise" button was hit) But seriously wtf is wrong with these people? Villain was 40/15/1.9 and looked overagressive but half decent post flop. [/ QUOTE ] I too am a 5/10 player that takes an occasional game at 10/20 when my LAG fishes go there. Hands like this are common. Draws are capped on the flop and turn; middle pair is c/r on the turn and capped; low pair is raised on the river. Lot of strange stuff that you see infrequently at 5/10. Just don't have some 5/10 tables and 10/20 tables open. |

[ QUOTE ]
2/4 + 3/6 full: 140k hands 3/6 6 max: 48k hands 5/10 6 max: 25k hands (I took a shot late last year, ran bad, limped back to 3/6 6 max) 10/20 6 max: 42 hands [/ QUOTE ] Not enough hands. U are not a proven winner at any limit except those 140K hands at full tables. Not so sure why everyone thinks u know how to beat 10/20. A total of 70K hands at 6max isnt a lot. Not saying u cant beat 10/20, but if u do, its not because u played 25K hands at 5/10 or 48K at 3/6 and been doing ok. Since u havent played a lot of hands at 6max ur problem at 10/20 will probably be that u have at least 1, often 2 players at table that are better then u, and 1 (or 2) LAGs that are nearly as good as u (if we talk winrates) but with a different style. I know I sound very pessimistic, but someone got to tell u that it can be very hard even if u know how to play ABC-poker. A rough week at 10/20 and it can be very hard to keep up your game, even for those who played there a lot. |
