It is easy to combat.

Whatever word they use, you overuse it.

Person: "Hey chief"
You: "Oooo hey there chief. How are you chief? What are you doing today chief? Did you have fruity pebbles for breakfast chief?"

they will get the hint.

Although I do not intend for it to be insulting. Why are you offended by a person who does not know your name using a friendly term to address you instead "hey you"?

I used this a few days ago with a couple guys that I met playing basketball, and they thought it was funny. They were black, and I am quite white. Perhaps I am not "hip" enough for the kids these days? I try to keep up with the lingo but it can be rather difficult.

McCain often leads off speeches with "my friends..." and it never sounds natural. Also I know this girl who leads all her group emails off with "Friends," and it makes her sound misinformed.
