i have an alienware that ii actually like a great deal.

i think i have amd64, 250gb hardrive, 2gb ram, all the usual [censored] etc
paired with an apple 30" amd a 20" monitor rotated vertically on the side.

i actually had someone build it for me-- what was supposed to be a reputable computer shop and had a lot of issues which went unresolved and had to shell out for another comp.

personally i like the security of having the ability to talk to a real company for customer service and knowing that they have a rep to maintain.

also, dell wont sell u a computer that is compatible w/ an Apple 30". I tried, if you have any questions about my setup or anything w/ apple adn video card compatibility just PM me.

SLI motherboard with Intel 975X or NVIDIA 680i chipset (higher end models will have 3 PCI-E slots which gives you ultimate flexibility)

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40Ghz CPU or better

2gb DDR2 RAM or (4gb if you want)

One or two 8800GTS 320mb PCI-E video card (640mb version if you want)

Whatever hard drive(s)
Whatever DVDRW
Non-crappy 600+ watt PSU (Corsair is good, Antec is good)
Case with a couple of 120mm fans

The rest of it just doesn't matter.

whoever would pay 1200 for the one from best buy is a moron.

It's really not hard to get a custom built pc from any of the online retailers. You don't need a quad core 1k cpu to play poker on. Anything 2 ghz + is pretty good. 2 gig of ram. 2 hard drives in a raid configuration.. And a good video card, any reasonable one will do, you don't need top of the line fancy all the features 3d stuff with 1 gig of ram, unless you're going to be playing all the latest games on it too. Most video cards come with VGA and DVI or 2 DVI connectors so you can use 2 monitors if you decide to go that route.

Jsnipes: the apples have dvi inputs, so any computer you buy is going to be compatible, no matter what line of crap dell will feed u.

Dude, don't pay $200 for anyone to link you to a model offered by a computer manufacturer. Most of these guys can't even build a PC themself, they're just going to a website and picking within your price range (because at 2-4k , the needs you described are obviously included).

I reccomend having someone build a badass PC for you with custom components that you know, because for $2,000 you can pick the exact same components a PC like Alienware will literally charge $4,000 for. And you won't have the tons of useless software to slow you down. You aren't paying market price for the components in pc's like that, you're paying market price+labor+rape. Whereas, sites like Newegg or Tiger Direct actually give you the components for market value and you can save the extra $$$$ by doing it yourself, or hell even throwing some guy $100 to put it together for oyu.

so true. building your own system will literally save you thousands of dollars on the system you are looking for. buy everything from newegg also.

If anyone needs help with a computer in the future, I'll be glad to help. I built durrrr's computer last summer - a reference if need be.

'built' meaning designed, or you actually built it?
