Jared is a good example of the middle ground I think. I've met a few Jareds but the name is not nearly as common as James or rare as Ariel. Only confusion is when someone thinks I'm a Jerry or that I use some terrible spelling like Jerrod.

how about Adrian <sp> keep the initial, and people all recognize it from the Rocky movie but it's still not very common.

this is not exactly the same, but I have a friend who I (and other old friends of his) call phil, and everyone else calls him michael. as his friend it was not that hard to transition to calling him michael around others, even though I still refer to him as phil when addressing him.

I think that if you hate your name you should by all means change it, the longer you go on as ariel the harder it will be. just do it, tell everyone you're doing it, and people will get used to it.

btw, I think you look like a doug.

I'm chuckling very heartily over this one, so I hope you're joking (which I assume you are).

I stand by what I said about this being a much smaller deal than you're making it out to be. But, if it'll really make you happy to change your name, Kramer's suggestion of Dov seems pretty cool--maybe it'll have the same problem as Ariel.

Also, remember that if you choose a pretty common name like David or James or something, you'll have to deal with the problem of meeting other people who have your name. I know that since my name isn't incredibly common, I'm not used to this and it always bothers me--I hate calling somebody else Noah, and I hate hearing my name when I'm not being addressed.

It also really sucks that you can't really try something out and then change back. You don't wanna spend a month introducing yourself as David to everyone and then just go back to Ariel, since that seems to have all of the negatives with none of the positives.

Jacob? Aaron? Gideon? I always kinda liked Boaz and Chayim, but nobody is going to be able to say that one.
