Re: It\'s a shame about my street
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Seems to me that's like trying to make the streets cleaner by bombing them. [/ QUOTE ] I haven't been bombed by my town's street sweepers as yet. And if you don't like the way your town upkeeps its streets, try to change it or move. That's the beauty of local government, you can influence it and there are 1000s of other local governments to choose from if you can't or don't want to try. [/ QUOTE ] Why should I be the one to move when there's a local maffia ruling the city? Or are you suggesting that might makes right? [/ QUOTE ] Enough hyperbole. |

It's the logical consequence of people using the love it or leave it argument. |

[/ QUOTE ] Ummm, when a discussion about something as pedestrian as street sweepers, becomes about a murderous, bombing mafia. You don't want ACland compared to Somalia, then don't compare every local govt to Somalia either. |

Kai, do you deny using the love it or leave it argument? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. Only a master of hyperbole such as yourself would interpret my quote below as "the love it or leave it argument" -- it clearly states that one of the advantages of local govt is that citizens can influence it, rather than flee from oppression. [ QUOTE ] And if you don't like the way your town upkeeps its streets, try to change it or move. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, you've achieved a new low. "Love it or leave it" suggests you live with the current system or go. My post implies local governments can be influenced and you can fight for change if you want (and quite possibly achieve it in a mid-to-small community). Also, since there are 1000s of towns with little barriers to entry, there's competition and ease of moving, if you can't achieve change or don't want to try. These options don't exist to the same degree in any way when "love it or leave it" is typically suggested at the national level. By your stance, choosing Walmart over Kmart is equivalent to believing in the love it or leave it fallacy in a general sense. |
