I live in Britain and guess what! Its exactly the same here. 90% of the people you will play with are scummers, fact.

I have similar problems because im like you, I talk ALOT inbetween hands (although never during a hand) and I chain smoke at the table. Which annoys people apparently.

Basicaly I try and ignore them and if they give me lip I tell them to look for another table or lump it.

It seems like every poker table has one a-hole at it. I understand someone not being social or friendly, I'm talking about just being rude and obnoxious for no reason. It's worse at poker than at any table game, which are pretty bad in their own right.

It's a shame because most players are just nice folks who want to have a good time.

Also, I hate beggars. Seriously. My standard response is [censored] you when someone I don't know asks me for money. I don't care if it's a another player or a bum on Atlantic Ave - like OP's case with the guy, he said no and they instantly start talking crap.

I'm not sure, but it sounds to me like you are the most common denominator here. It could be you have a difficult time expressing yourself or something, because, in all of my life, I've never had anyone yell at me because I didn't loan them money. Possibly, your attempts at humor are coming across as smartazz saracasm? I don't know, man, but you seem to be the problem here.

I get the feeling over and over again that many poker players are on short fuses and if you provoke them the slightest bit they will get furious and implode. Sometimes I resent having to play in an atmosphere that is anything but gentlemanly, mildly sociable, and relaxing.

Welcome to the world of gambling.

It brings out the worst in people.

1 & 4, especially 1, likely have a gambling problem. Addiction isn't always pretty. Lots of losers in the room.

I really don't see any reason to up the rake in #3.

Poker = Grown men acting like babies. Adjust accordingly.

I get the feeling you've never been to a real poker table, because crap like that is pretty common (Taj Mahal comes to mind). And people asking you for money - I hope you're not serious. Walk eight blocks in AC and you're sure to run into a someone who will a) ask you for something and b) act like an ass if you don't give it. Same goes for the poker room or casino floor.

This is standard casino fare.

Is the correct play to
A) Just ignore, avoid, and remain non-confrontational
or
B) Get semi-confrontational and let them know they have pissed you off, yet avoid anything physical

Choice A is smartest, least volatile, safest, but can leave bottled up anger.

Choice B is more risky, but sometimes much more satisfying.

I usually opt A Sometimes I wish to opt b.

Eh, I wouldn't say Choice B is more satisfying. Do you ever feel good about yourself afterwards? Is putting more anger out in the world solving anything?

Treat the scum like you do a child. Realize that's just the way they are, don't take it personally, and ignore the annoying stuff. There's nothing to be gained from inviting confrontation, except to put yourself in a worse state of mind. Focus your energies on tuning it out and not taking it personally. You seem like a nice guy, and repeated practicing of Choice B will change that.
