It depends on who you talk to. I've always thought like you, that nerds were any sort of techie, science, math type, and the geeks were the socially inept from that set. Some people swap those terms.

yeah i believe i would definitely qualify as a nerd, but a geek is like a 90 lb. weakling with a pocket protector and thick glasses with tape in the middle, and a high nasally voice

Geek has been reclaimed by people like me, ie those who like sci fi and other forms of geekdom, but dont slot into the classic stereotype of a socially backward, pasty little kids who enjoy dressing up as their favourite character from Buck Rogers/Star Trek/Star Wars/Etc and going to conventions.

Ill agree that Nerd is someone more techie, science type dudes who study Computer Science whilst pleasuring themselves to pictures of Lara Croft.

Out of interest, what the hell is a pocket protector?

Also, where does dweeb (a US term not generally used over here) fit into all of this?

Default geek v. nerd

opposite. Often geek is used for marketing and promotion with no negative connotation (Geek Squad, thinkgeek.com, etc)

Off the top of my head no equivalents come to mind for using "nerd".

OK, the direct flight that runs from San Jose, CA to Austin, TX is nicknamed "the nerd bird," and that is not necessarily negative. But the rhyme is the thing in that case.

daryn,

I'm not rocking that new avatar of yours at all. You need to revert to a pissed-off looking badass, which is much more in line with your persona.

I wouldn't know.

I'm the coolest person here. I can't even see nerds or geeks. To me, nerds are like ghosts are to normals.
