Roots is good if you have time. [/ QUOTE ] i have heard roots is good, but it's about history. i was looking for more current topics - like what does the typical black person think about the OJ Simpson. |

joecash, Not really many black people like that around, most are either lower class rapper/drug dealer types (see Boyz N the Hood, New Jack City, etc.) or really rich (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) or both (see Jay Z / Puff Daddy / etc). Your best bet if you're serious about educating yourself here is to grab some DVDs of the Cosby Show. They are still sorta upper class, but should at least give you some good ideas/strategies on how to deal with middle class blacks. [/ QUOTE ] i would have to say the cosby's are quite upper class, being that it is Dr. Huxtable. And the mom of the family is a lawyer. When u have both parents in the household a doctor and lawyer I would say that puts u in the upper class. |

Re: good movie on the black culture?
joe,
Just remembered a pretty good one. Grand Canyon features Danny Glover as a working class black (tow truck driver) who has to have interactions with an upper-middle class white person (Kevin Kline). Also, he gets introduced to a black person who works in an office (pretty rare and very applicable to what you are trying to learn). For comparison purposes, this movie also features some black gang members. Overall pretty good thing to study in terms of learning how to interact with middle class blacks. |

Re: good movie on the black culture?
joe,
Oh wow, thought of another good one. I forgot there was a TV show about blacks going to college. A Different World. If you can find some DVDs of this, it will be very helpful in helping you relate to blacks who have been to college. Also, a lot of these blacks are very light skinned and some are part white, so that should make it easier for you to watch than some of this other stuff that features darker blacks. |
