Here are ten albums from the past ten years that should give you a solid "indie" foundation imo:

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak or The Tyranna of Distance
The Decemberists - any of the first three (Castaways and Cutouts, Her Majesty, or Picaresque)
The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (Come on Feel the Illinoise)
The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America

obviously there are many more good ones and important ones as well but i think this is a solid start, a diverse and important group.

indie = awesome music thats not mainstream ya?

Jack's Mannequin - sounds like pop (not alt.), but they're unknown and the few who do know them, are usually strong followers.

Metric - pretty unique music. Really good.

Yes, def. check out The Shins and The Decemberists. Not sure if it's technically indie, but The Pixies rock too.

Outside Box,

Here's a list of stuff that you'll probably like right away. Some other stuff will take a bunch of repeat listens to really get into, and unless you like other stuff like it, it won't work out. Here you go:

A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock and Roll
Band of Horses - Everythign all the Time

Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret
Interpol - Antics
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Good Health
Pretty Girls Make Graves - New Romance
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
Spoon - Girls Can Tell
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Ted Leo - Hearts of Oak
Ted Leo - Shake the Sheets
The Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts
The Decemberists - Her Majesty
The Decemberists - Picaresque
The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Wilco - Summerteath
Wrens - The Meadowlands

Once you're done with this, you can move onto stuff like:

Cursive - Domestica
Cursive - The Ugly Organ
Danielson - Ships
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Give it Back
The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

I just thought of another guy for you to check out.

Wesley Willis. He's not really indie, and its actually a stretch to even call him music, but he's a lot of fun to listen to.
