Agreed many bm players will carry this in pocket but you never see people buying in for 40bb. 2/4 - 4/8you see most people buyin for 100 some for 200 at 4/8 but 100 seems pretty standard.

I've been playing low limit B&M for a year (2/4, now 4/8-6/12) now and have never seen anyone buy in for 40bb in one shot. I get strange looks for buying in for $200 at 4.

If your b&m game has unlimited HU betting and a 5bet cap like around here buying in at least 35-40bbs is a good idea. 30BB swings are really not that uncommon in an active game so even buying in 40 you might have to reload occasionally. Also, its never a problem having too many bets on the table in limit, just too few. No reason to set yourself up for the latter. Obv i agree that if you cant round up 40BBs you shouldnt play in the game.

loose low limit b&m games have a high variance so it is not uncommon to play perfectly and be down like 30BB. Playing optimally in these games increases your variance. If you are never 20-30BB loser than your hourly rate will be half of what it really can be. Rather than analyzing session results, i think it is a good idea to analyze the big hands won/lost as a check point during play. Playing too many few hands depending on the table is harder to analyze but that's another thing that should be considered.

How does this have anything to do with your hourly rate? Time is time, hours are hours no matter when you put in the hours.

often times the games you will have the biggest swings in will be the best games. More fish playing like idiots (especially in limit) equals more variance so bigger swings.

variance is a big part of poker....if you give up then your just part of the 80% of losers...sure its rough but if your a winning player then dont worry you know you are and just play on.. you will win in the long run and thats poker

Same amount of BB. Sometimes more. Either way I usually buy in for 13-20 BB.

I've only skimmed a few of these posts, so forgive me if already posted. But before I became a poker player, I counted cards at blackjack. Two quotes that I learned from my blackjack days have served me well in my poker career:

And most important - I repeat this every time I have a bad beat, or am running crappy (just substitute the word "poker" for "blackjack")

So if the game is good, don't use stop losses. Keep playing so long as your mental acuity is intact. If you are tilting, leave. Get a drink, a sandwich, take a walk, have sex, whatever. Just make sure you are properly bankrolled for your limit. The proper bankroll will make all losses easier to take.

For live, I don't like to buy in for more than 20BB at a time, just because more chips take up too much real estate on the table and I feel cramped, but I am prepared to buy more chips if my stack dwindles.
