I usualy just beat them to the punch, as I see them aproaching me, I walk up to them and say "could you spare any change? 50 cents or anything will help"

They often give me money. Or at least leave me alone

I think this is awesome.

In Vancouver I would usually drop some bud (weed) in their hats/collection box or buy them some food. I don't mind the guys who really just want to buy booze/drugs with the money but I give so rarely that it makes me feel better if I don't support the ones that do that.

You could try not looking for ways to be a dick to people, regardless of whether they're legitimately disadvantaged or just of questionable morality.

I make them work for it.

"Give me 20 push ups."

As they are doing push ups I tell them I work for my money so they should have to work for theirs. Then I hand them some change or a single or two.
