I saw Wesley Willis live in, I believe, 2003, not long before he died. I'd always found his music highly entertaining so I was looking forward to this.
Before he took the stage I saw him signing autographs and meeting fans. At this point I was a little weirded out and uncomfortable-- he's obviously mentally ill, and I had the uneasy feeling of watching something exploitative, like a carnival freak show. All that went away when he took the stage. It's fascinating: He's really earnest and sincere about his performances. He has a GREAT time on stage and was very energetic. The audience was super-supportive and he really ate up the attention. Even though his music is gimmicky (and arguably exploitative), this was clearly what he loved doing. Seeing him in that environment made me appreciate his music all the more.
