did he grow that beard AFTER the civil war? maybe to hide from angry southerners?

Nice detective work- you were close. The correct answer is martin_van_buren.jpg

I wonder how many people who guessed Lincoln followed the link, hovered on it, or right clicked the picture. I'm gonna guess at least a third.

Wow. I don't think I would've gotten that without the link. It's crazy how different people look when they're clean-shaven especially when you're only used to seeing them with facial hair.

As an aside one of my good friends has an uncle that has one of, if not the largest (I believe) collections of daguerrotypes in the country. Many of them are in the Smithsonian. One I rememember him having specifically is the first pic of a locomotive.
