Day 3:

The drive back to LA was a boring one. Sarah slept basically the whole time, while I tried not to join her. Getting closer to LA there was one white knuckle moment. I hit a grade that I’m certain I didn’t climb on the way out of town. “weeee a big hill!” turned “please god let me live”, as I found my foot nursing the break, still pushing 90 as I tried to make it around this damn curve in the hill staring down an xxxxx-foot drop off just outside my drivers door. I kind of felt like Chevy Chase after he about kills the family falling asleep on the highway – where they wake up oblivious, him dripping in sweat.

We made it to Hollywood just in time to hop on the last 2-hour “celebrity home” tour thingy. Not my cup of tee, but ½-napping in the back of a van sounded pretty inviting at this point. Our tour guide was THEE guide to get. He was basically certifiable, but there isn’t a man on the face of the planet that is more excited about his job. He’s a huge Hollywood buff on his own…sharing magazine articles about him from around the world. His passenger seat was stacked with his personal books, pictures, post cards, etc. Basically a slightly more masculine Richard Simmons type of character.

We got some great views of the hills and the city/ocean in the distance. All together, we must have seen 40-50 homes. Our two brushes with fame: we were parked outside of Ozzy’s house when he remarked that he thought they were in Europe. Just as we’re about to inch away, Sharon pulls in behind us in a black something by herself – stopped, waiting for the gates to open. Later on Sunset, the American Chopper-whatever guys cruised by filming. An open van in front with cameras rolling on the main dudes on their choppers – with a police bike escort behind.

Hollywood sign (you think? )

Eric Clapton's "Blackie" guitar - which this guitar museum place apparently has ensured for $1mill

Speaking of Richard Simmons. This is his mailbox -- which happens to be an exact replica of his house (goofball )

Paris Hilton's pad. With something like >$700k worth of cars parked on the road.

Our 2-hour tour turned into 3-hours, as “Richard” decided that he’d give us some bonus stuff being the last tour of the day. My interest was fading as my stomach started growling. We didn’t get back to the parking garage until almost 7pm. Found a great ‘NY style’ pizza place down the road…enjoying the Eagles game for a bit sharing a beer (she drinks Rolling Rock I’ve learned).

Did I mention the freeways in LA are [censored] insane?? I have Jay on the phone giving me directions to his place. The "105" (I think...maybe 110) is PACKED...folks heading downtown. From previous experience, I've already learned that your exit is not necessarily going to be on the right. I see the freeway I'm supposed to get on to in the distance - joke with Sarah that it probably exits to the left - see in the distance a big ass sign that says "### exit left". Mother [censored]! I now have oh, about 1/4mi to move across 6-8 lanes of fast moving jam-packed traffic. Blinker on and a sliding we go...."sorry, excuse me, sorry, pardon". We manage to not kill ourselves, running over the "brrrrrrrrp" strip moving finally into our lane. I give Jay a call again with basically a "wft?!". He informs me that I risked life & limb needlessly. THAT lane is the carpool exit. I could have stayed put where I was

By the time we got to Microbet’s, I was beat. Jay’s family is awesome. An awesome little house in a perfect neighborhood just a few blocks from the ocean – dead-ending into a public park. I’m a huge sucker for little ones. His couldn’t be cuter. Excited to host these strangers from afar, they each took turns parading their most prized possessions from their bedroom. The enthusiasm and sparkle in little girls eyes never gets tiring. It was a great way to end the day.

Nice report Dave! I wanna go to Vegas again soon.

I'll have to do one of these father daughter trips in ~ 9 years. Not sure if meeting Slacker & his son would be a good idea for my daughter though?

Wow awesome TR and pictures so far. I find it interesting that a lot of 2+2er's like to play BJ. Do you find it hard to sit and play BJ when poker seems like such a more +EV investment? I mean, unless you can count cards or have some techniques to the madness : )

Did you end up playing 3:2 or 6:5 btw?

Nice picture of blackie too!

Ok, let’s put you guys out of your misery before my 10 o’clock meeting (posting a little late obv.)

Sunday was to be BBQ at Skip’s place…a chance to catch up again with him & Yugo (who I met last Feb in Vegas) – and also Suzzer. But poor Skip got sick (or decided for me that it’d be best if I didn’t bring blue-daughter around Yoooog!). With our extra night in Vegas, we needed the time anyway to finish off Sarah’s LA stuff. You still owe me a BBQ Skip.

Sarah’s a big Marilyn Monroe fan. The night before, our tour guide gave her a book with all her known addresses. Our first quest was to find the house she died in. Apparently we were in a neighborhood not far from OJ’s old place. The house was at the end of a tight dead-end. I kind of felt a little sleazy sneaking around this quiet neighborhood. We parked at the end of the road and strolled down the dead-end trying not to look too conspicuous (as if we were the first to attempt this great feat). We found the address & I held the camera above the fence to take the shot. A couple large dogs next door started barking, so we high-tailed it out of there before the cops locked us up for life for walking on this public street

Monroe's house of d-d-d-death

We spent the rest of the afternoon taking on Beverley Hills & Hollywood by foot. Of course she had to stroll down Rodeo Drive, trying to spot a celeb…but no luck. She was actually scared to even walk into these stores. It would have been easier if Jay had a small dog we could borrow to walk in with like the rest of the rich folk. I finally dragged her into a couple, because I knew I’d hear about it if she didn’t. A $6,000 purse here, a couple grand for a pair of shoes there…we left empty handed. We grabbed an ‘Italian ice cream cone’ from a little place on Santa Monica Blvd (where she saw some reality show peeps eating at on TV after we got home) before we headed back over to Hollywood.

Parking near Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, we started with finding all the star hand-prints…including Marilyn of course. I remember lighting a smoke when some dude saved me by informing me of the $200something fine for smoking in LA (apparently this place was off limits, despite being outdoors).

She thought it was pretty funny that Godzilla got his own square (would make for an interesting dedication)

We didn’t make it too far down the boulevard looking at stars in the sidewalk. “meh” sets in after a block or so. The big indoor/outdoor 5-story mall thing is a pretty cool place (with a nice view of the hills from the crosswalks). We didn’t spend more than a couple hours down there – wanting to get back to Jay’s to catch our first west coast sunset.

Jay and the family were nice enough to accommodate us in our short drive to the beach. We loaded up the kiddies and headed down to the pier in Manhattan Beach (I hope I got that right). Beautiful place really. MUCH different than our limited beach experiences in North Carolina and Florida. What really struck me was how densely populated the ocean-front was with homes. After sunset Microfamily treated us to a gut-busting Italian dinner at a little family restaurant nearby.

Jay's babies

The only poker of the trip was Sunday night…Jay talked me into a couple hours of $1/$2. We went to Larry Flynt’s Hustler Casino. Suzzer had a standing offer to meet us, but he was apparently ill too ([be strong blue...not personal])

I understand it’s much smaller than others, but I was pretty impressed nonetheless. It was a $50max table, so we weren’t really deep enough to get too creative. I won a decent pot early, while Jay beat me to getting stacked off. Well into his own recovery I got a little too attached to TT with an idiot (motioning an “I’m all in” on the flop – that the dealer interpreted as a check-behind. Not that it would have impacted the hand…or justified the move anyway…live and learn). We had a 7am flight to get up for Monday morning…I didn’t have enough energy left to bother reloading. But it was nice to get out for a bit and see a real live card room anyway.

I guess that about wraps it up. An uneventful trip home (but for a strange running into of my x’s 2nd husband+kid in the Atlanta airport…who we shared the return flight home with).

Huge thanks to Microfamily and Skipperfamily for offering a warm bed & allowing us to add experiencing a bit of SolCal to our life experiences. It was a blast being able to share this time with Sarah.

14+ hours of flying, 700 miles on the rental car, another 5 miles at least of walking...a bit much for an old guy to accomplish in a few quick days!

That’s about it Skip!! End of story. Wipe the nap-drool from your cheek and get back to pwn’ing
