If you knew the potential was there for a break-in, you should have locked the window. If you are very sure that the guy who stole your money is the same guy you give car rides, then you should politely ask him for your money back or else you won't give him car rides. Afterwards, you should not give him car rides anyways, or if you do, you should atleast not be his friend because he will likely scam you again. If you ever feel threatened or otherwise concerned for your safety or have no other options, of course you should contact authorities as here you are in the right 100%, which means you are not giving anything up except the convenience of settlement (which you will have obviously expired penultimately.)
