Re: Blu Ray of HD DVD? Which will win out?
both players will have to drop dramatically in price. given the fact that HD tv's are still extremely expensive, i don't see how these will overtake the market since you'll be forced to re-buy your entire dvd collection.
Similar to laserdisk or mini-disk, i imagine it will take one more tech generation to change the standard format. |

TME -
So the quality of individual movies varies a lot? Most don't look as good as HDTV broadcasts, which is to say they similar or only barely better than a standard DVD? But a select few surpass that? |

Disappointing. [/ QUOTE ] I'd imagine it will be similar to the initial DVD distribution. The quality of DVD transfer has greatly increased over the past few years, and though some DVD's are still released in a haphazard manner, most films make a point to have a high quality DVD. For example, James Cameron re-released a version of Terminator 2 that is lightyears better than the first DVD release. Even others, such as Black Hawk Down, intitially come with a very high transfer. Compare these to the initial releases back when DVD first hit the scene and i see no reason why the standard of quality for HD-DVD's will dramatically improve, along with the quality of the players. |

I picked up the HD-DVD add on for the XBox 360 and I'm digging it so far. Miami Vice and Batman Begins look incredible.
Plus you can use it as a USB device for your computer if you want. |

Re: Blu Ray of HD DVD? Which will win out?
I have HD DVD the movies look great. Havent seen Blu Ray yet. While Blu Ray might hold more capacity I believe HD DVD will win out because of their jump start on the market. Not to mention they are cheaper players. It reminds me of VHS vs Beta, while Beta was the better product, VHS won out.

Re: Blu Ray of HD DVD? Which will win out?
So how long until my regular DVD's are obsolete? I'd like to get rid of them long before they are as worthless as VHS tapes.

So how long until my regular DVD's are obsolete? I'd like to get rid of them long before they are as worthless as VHS tapes. [/ QUOTE ] Unlike VHS, DVDs are readable and copyable with consumer accessible equipment. This should prevent the obsolete libraries of VHS (and LaserDisc) from occuring with DVD. My plan is to when necessary, rip anything I wish to retain from DVD and reburn it to whatever format wins. However this is a ways off. J |
