Essentially the exile is similar more than likely to a non-visiting, safe prison. You are not in the "outside world".

I do believe the vote tally isn't reflective of peoples true position though, because if this wasn't some silly hypothetical I doubt a majority of you would still stand on your moral high ground and leave your families for the next 20 years, especially with the fact of getting arrested erased.

"Moral high ground"? We're talking about murdering an innocent person. These poll results are depressing.

does the person making the decision take the gun away from you and give it to someone you will never meet if you pick murder?

If he will die either way it doesn't matter who pulls the trigger, only difference is the person who can't do it loses 20 years of his life. Unfortunately doing it is the only option here, unless you have nothing to live for.

The fact remains not that many people would be willing to leave their children for the next 20 years if put in this unrealistic scenario.

If you choose exile instead, does the stranger still get murdered?

Ok, even though I thought up this moral question, it does have some similar historic references.

In Germany, under Hitlers reign, a lot of Germans persecuted the jews out of fear for their own safety. Either you were against the jews or one of them.

The choice many made was, that they put their own (and their family's) safety higher than that of another (and innocent) human being.

The annals of history have many examples where people are forced to either destroy another human being or risk being persecuted themselves. (Stasi's informant system, Pinochets reign etc.)

I think it lies deep in human nature to put their own well being higher than the life of a stranger. Call it a survival perk, if you will.

The real question, however, is to what degree you would tolerate a decrease in life quality in order to safe the life of a stranger.

Would you give 20 years of your life?
Only 10?
or just the left pinky?

Yes. Do you have any knowledge of ethics?

John says he's gonna kill Suzie unless I rape Sally. I walk home and 8 table PLO200 and have no ethical obligation to anyone. Holla!
