He's good enough to be a 4th outfielder, especially at minimum salary.

By far.

I saw that deal is contingent on Sheffield agreeing to an extension through '09. Is he going to play 1B? Or are they going to convert Monroe to 1B?

[/ QUOTE ]

Leyland says he'll primarily be a DH with sometime in the OF.

wtf

Let's hope he's willing to play 1b for the Tigers...

or let's really hope we have that Bondy for Teix deal they've mentioned...

Geez, this is taking trading young for old to a brand new level. Sanchez was our best minor league pitcher, or so I'm told.

I like it, we are loaded with young pitching, and need some patient hitters

[/ QUOTE ]

38-year olds though?

Why not just give up Sanchez for Soriano mid-season? IIRC that's what the Nats were asking for.

[/ QUOTE ]

The Nats wanted also Curtis Maybin, a top OF prospect, which was a deal breaker.

This is only true if your definition of "4th outfielder" is "someone who gets 1 PA per week". If you sign JD Drew, your fourth OF becomes "someone who may have to play 1/2 a season."

The Yanks should expect to be the class of baseball given their resources. They shouldn't have a plan that includes regular playing time for Melky Cabrera, unless they suddenly decide that they care about money. I'm not trying to slam Melky, but the Yankees should have real stars all over the field.

This is why I said "Melky (+ $$$)".

If Drew happens to be out for a long time, they can easily just go out and get someone. Also keep in mind they already have Abreu Damon Matsui, so to replace Drew, they could just aquire a 1B/DH guy which should be easy to find, and then move Abreu back into the OF.

Also, to limit Drew's injury risk, they could DH him once a week or whatever. I'm sure that could help.

Is Abreu their current first baseman? I'm kinda confused as the current state of the team.

I would say he is currently their horribly fielding Right Fielder.

The Yankees made a great set of moves by acquiring Abreu for almost nothing when Sheff was hurt, then getting a top prospect for Sheff after he came back.
