When listening to Art Tatum's "20th Century Piano Genius" there are passages that just makes ones jaw drop. I can't imagine how cool it must have been to have been at that party while Art Tatum just casually dazzles.

Discovering and exploring the work of the jazz masters will be very exciting and rewarding.

Some suggested works are as follows:

Any of the Miles stuff discussed in this thread.

The Dizzy Gillespie/Charlie Parker recording at Town Hall, New York City, June 22,1945 is amazing.

Sonny Rollins "Saxophone Colossus" and "Plus 4" which includes Max Roach and Clifford Brown. Max Roach, Clifford Brown and Sonny Rollins are Virtuosos. "Study in Brown" and "At Basin Street" are two of their best works.

A personal favorite of mine is "The Money Jungle" by Duke Ellington, Max Roach and Charles Mingus. These three titans push each other in a way that they only can. You also sense a deep reverance for Ellington by both Mingus and Roach in this recording.

"Monk's Dream" by Thelonius Monk is another masterpiece. Many of the songs on this record were recorded previously, but this was Monk's first recording for Columbia Records. Tenor saxman Charles Rouse adds some great work on this record.

Believe me, once you start delving into this music you will find it difficult to stop. It seems like each record you listen to will trigger you to search for more. With the current popular music landscape being so bleak and derivative discovering these past treasures can be similar to finding brand new music.

any Stan Getz.the Joao Gilberto album is a great start.I really like bossa nova out of Brasil. If you like Getz/Gilberto move up to the Antonio Carlos Jobim songbook.Great music when you are setting the mood when a girl is over to the house.

I think this is the exact reason I've begun to appreciate and seek out Jazz. So much music now is crap and even the good stuff gets old quick.

But, for example, the Miles Davis stuff I have been listening to for the last six-seven months I have yet to get tired of. Everytime I listen to Kind of Blue and Milestones it's like listening to it for the first time.

Again, thanks to everyone for putting forth so many opinions and so much effort in what is good in many different areas.

On a side note: My most recent pick up was Miles Davis' Porgy & Bess, and I was kinda disappointed by it. I haven't given it a thorough listen, but my initial reaction is that it's my leats favorite so far. What have others thought of it?
